"COLUMBUS JCT., Iowa — Low math test scores by its eighth–grade English Limited Language, or ELL, subgroup has placed the Columbus Middle School on the federal Schools In Need of Assistance list, school board members learned.

Officials said the school hopes to prevent sanctions under the federal No Child Left Behind legislation by providing extra help for math students during the day, strengthening the English as a Second Language, or ESL, program at the middle school, implementing the “Power of I” program, supporting an advisor/advisee program for all middle school students and especially those in the ELL program, implementing the Connected Math Series for 6th-8th grades, increasing student expectations, lesson rigor and relevance, boosting administrative oversight with walk-throughs and maintaining high visibility."

Note that there is no mention of extra funding for all of this extra focus on the English learner students, it will have to be drawn from other programs.

I'am in a bit of a strange position. My grandfather in the U.S who is a citizen will be filling for my mom who is 36 & unmarried plus my siblings and I who are under 21 years of age, who's names will be on the petition as well.We currently live in Canada,my question is if my mom applies for permanent residency and it is granted and she chooses to go back to Canada temporarily due to bussiness reasons am I able to stay in the U.S if I have permanent residence through my mom? I'am turning 18 so I can legally live on my own,but I'am curious to know what would I do in this situation?...If i were to seek employement, would I tell the employer I have permanent resident status?..I'am asking because I figured if my siblings and I have are names on the petition keep in mind we are under 21 would we would automatically gain permanent residencey through are mom?

The children of undocumented workers are getting higher levels of education. They are the doctors, politicians, and bussinesspeople of tommorrow. They will one day change the idiotic laws against undocumented workers. And do you know what their first step in society will be? LEGALIZING their parents! What do you say to that?

ok so i didn't mean to piss anyone off and if i did too bad.... i live in minnesota and have worked for a major taxi company for the past 3 years... and all of the charity groups that PAY for the taxi fare are for people that you can't even pronounce their names... we are haveing to close schools cause there is not enough money to go around and here we are paying anywhere from $50 to $500 bucks a day (A DAY!!) so these people can go to doctors appts and all sorts of stuff... (Maybe put that money into our schools and houseing for people that need it...?)Thats a free ride for them and its coming out of taxpayers pockets.. instead all this free medical insurance for foreiners and "tax free for 7 years" why not make them pay taxes... all i am saying is we can't support our own and its not our fault that they were born in some poor 3rd world country, so why can they come here and start turing America into one??

How come no one stands up for Americans. We dont get anything free, Americans born and raised in America have to work till they are 65 years of age to qualify for any social security, and not mention we dont get full medicare, only 80% coverage when we turn 65. All the years prior we have to pay for insurance out of pocket. If you are a immigrant you get 100% medical insurance, subsidized housing and food stamps and can get on welfare, that is NOT FAIR. Immigrants have more rights than those born and raised in America ,WHY??? and why nothing done about it?? Americans have to pay 20% hospital bills after the age of 65 and that is very expensive unles they themselves pay for there own secondary insurance, NOT FAIR FOR AMERICANS

So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made
up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests we should tear down the
Statue of Liberty because the people now in question aren't being treated
the same as those who passed through Ellis Island and other ports of entry.
Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr.
Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of
immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all 20 areas
of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and
stand in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get
down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to
uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times.
They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households
and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.
They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their children a new
life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate
into one culture.
Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to
protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had
brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity. Most of their
children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along
side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany, Italy, France
and Japan. None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought
about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans
fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending
the United States of America as one people. When we liberated France, no
one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German
American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans.
And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those
immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag
and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to
their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly
knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one
red, white and blue bowl.
And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same
rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a
different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a
guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not
what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who
landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all
the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a
land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better
life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example
by those waving foreign country flags.
And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I
wouldn't start talking about dismantling the United States just yet.

Shop around, find places and contractors who don't traffic in that sort of illegal activity. Don't hire businesses that use cheap, illegal labor and don't use their services. It's your little way of making things better and living a life of quality and honesty. Any other ideas?

usatoday.com Man arrested in Colorado dragging death CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) — A man was arrested in the gruesome dragging death of a woman after a stained and tattered photograph of him was found at the crime scene, police said Wednesday.
Jose Luis Rubi-Nava, 36, was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of murder and jailed without bail. Investigators said they were still trying to identify the victim, who was dragged behind a vehicle with a rope, leaving a trail of blood more than a mile long.

Authorities did not immediately respond to questions about how the photograph ended up near the woman's body, which was discovered Monday in a suburban neighborhood about 20 miles south of Denver.

The picture shows a couple who appear to be in their 30s, with the man leaning his arm on the woman's shoulder. Investigators did not say whether the woman in the picture was the victim.

The photo had been released to the public, and Sheriff Dave Weaver said tips from citizens helped lead to the arrest. Weaver offered no motive for the killing, and the sheriff's department did not respond to repeated requests by phone and in writing for more information.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Carl Rusnok said agents believe Rubi-Nava is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

At a court appearance Wednesday afternoon, Rubi-Nava listened through a translator as District Judge Paul A. King formally told him the charge he faces.

King sealed the arrest warrant affidavit, which outlines the preliminary allegations against Rubi-Nava, at the request of public defender Kathleen McGuire. King said he would consider McGuire's request for a gag order.

Neighbors discovered the woman's body before dawn. Her face was unrecognizable and an orange tow rope was around her neck, said Nancy Foley, who lives nearby.

An autopsy indicated the woman died of asphyxiation and head injuries from being dragged.

The trail of blood led from Interstate 25 to the woman's body, which was found on a street lined with large ranch-style homes on spacious lots. On Wednesday, highway crews were spreading fresh tar over the roads to cover the traces of blood.

Basically I am just so angered about the Illegal Immigration issue. I am a Journalism Grad Student and I see the truth regarding the catastrophe at our nation's borders. In any other nation, the millions who cross illegaly every year would be prosecuted and then extradited back to their home country. Why does our government coutinue to be ignorant regarding this issue? If something is not done soon, California, Arizona, and Texas will be the first to go. Anyone else agree? You will if you are a citizen who sees the deception.

For example, if there is a problem is Hati all the Hatians don't want to move to say Mexico, India, or any place in south America, they feel they have a right to come to the US. When there was a problem in el salvador all the people came here to the US and then formed MS-13. When there was a problem in Somalia we started a program bringing them into the US.

In the muslim and african world the people there say whites are evil and christians are infedels, but then move in huge numbers to places like France, Germany, and England where they take free goverment services.

Why is it also that Mexico and south american countries have much tougher immigration laws than the US, even though nobody wants to move there?
