Fallacies are assertions that violate the accepted standards of valid argument. Fallacious claims are not the same as false claims, though fallacies are often based on falsities. A fallacy is an assertion that is stated with the intent to sell an idea deceptively. It is important that citizens understand them so they will learn to recognize faulty or deceptive reasoning. We need to be able to identify fallacies, because they so often shut off rather than engender debate. Bill O'Rielly on Fox uses fallacies very well to manipulate his mostly uneducated viewers. If they understood fallacy manipulation they would realize how often their intellegence is being insulted!
