Hitler was a populist leader, he gave the people hope when they had none, he promised jobs, and offered pride in Germany. You must look at the situation in the late 1920's in Europe the world wide depression had really crippled the Germans and left them a defensless weak nation. Where once a proud people had enjoyed world power they were in effect a second rate country. Out of those ashes Hitler was rising by gathering the disenchanted and forlorn peoples who would do whatever was necessary to gain a respectability and acceptance.
The early converts were clearly those who had the most to gain, later as the ranks of the National Socialist party increased more and more middle class and well to do Germans also began to appreciate the promises that Hitler offered.
There was a lack of order in Germany, a country that has always prided itself in order and discipline, things "as they should be", this proved to be a way for Hitler to attract the people. He could provide order and discipline, using the quasi-military arm of the National Socialist Party, led by a pervert Ernst Rhoem, the so called Brown Shirts were a political police.
Hitler was in the right place with a message of hope for the right people willing to listen and accept, that explains his popularity and once he controlled the German Government he was able to get himself appointed Chancellor and then have all power transfered to him for life. Then there was no stopping him and there was no opposing him. Feuhrer means leader and that is what role Hitler chose for himself.

Hitler was a natural leader of men in a country that was in ruins , he propsed solidarity re-uniting the country to work together for the good of all , he spoke to the common man promising work so he could feed his family , industry to rebuild a nation , he had charisma and understanding of the poor , he wanted action not promises . He took half starved beaten down people and gave them hope and pride . What's more he delivered what he promised and openly derided the established Government at that time for thier failures . Had Hitler not become consumed with his own success and tried to force himself on other countries he very probably would have been remembered as one of the Worlds greatest leaders . His people followed him to war blindly believing without question that if he said it was for the best then it must be , he had not failed them yet . By the time the truth became apparent (that the war was wrong ) the people no longer had a choice but to follow him it was a do or die situation for the whole country .

The Treaty of Versailles which ended World War I brought Germany to its knees and punished them severely for starting that war. They were required to pay huge sums of money to other countries as reparations for their involvement. Thus, their economy and national pride took a big hit. Along came Hitler, a great speaker, and he promised to return Germany to its proper place in world leadership and restore Germany to a fruitful economy. At first the German people were ready for this "savior" to come along, and they adored him!! Later, as the war progressed, many became disillusioned with Hitler and saw him for what he was, a brilliant but sick maniac.
I hope this helps.

When Adolf became Chancellor the Germans were starving
he soon turned that round, gave them food, housing, transport ( a world beating car that they still make in Brazil even now)
As a motivational speaker there has been nobody to compare
is it any wonder people followed him
yes he went nutty, but there is a very fine line between genius and madman

A high school friend of mine's mother was a teenager in Hitler era Germany. She often referred to him as a sexy man and a sex symbol. I was shocked but she was adamant about her opinion. If you can check out a copy of the biography "Adolf Hitler" author John Toland, you will definitely be educated and shocked about Hitler.

At first very well, he appeared to unite the country, creating jobs building motorways, applauding the family unit. Giving the German people a sense of national pride after the humiliation of the Treaty of Versailles, however ................

Germany was decimated by WW1. The Nazis made gaines when there was no hope of any other source of stability. Its a lesson to us all. No matter how despirate the times, there is always a way of avoiding fundementalism.
