Fallacies are assertions that violate the accepted standards of valid argument. Fallacious claims are not the same as false claims, though fallacies are often based on falsities. A fallacy is an assertion that is stated with the intent to sell an idea deceptively. It is important that citizens understand them so they will learn to recognize faulty or deceptive reasoning. We need to be able to identify fallacies, because they so often shut off rather than engender debate. Bill O'Rielly on Fox uses fallacies very well to manipulate his mostly uneducated viewers. If they understood fallacy manipulation they would realize how often their intellegence is being insulted!

Interested in comming out of the cave and know when you are being manipulated???

*****Do an internet search on "fallacy indicators".

Here is a very short list:
SLIPPERY SLOPE, Inciting an emotion instead of offering reasons, TWO WRONGS DON'T MAKE IT RIGHT, STRAWMAN, RED HERRING, SMOKE SCREEN, BEGS THE QUESTION

Yes. Either type of manipulation relies of irrationality rather than reason, but it takes some effort to detect it and some "cool" to resist it. Both use the natural human fear of being negatively categorized, and one or the other may baldly accuse you of treason or worse if you don't agree, or categorize you as a fool or a redneck or an egghead intellectual, whatever, if you don't agree. Strangely, all, by virtue of distributing their articles, are using the print media, and yet all in one manner or another attack the media. Reason is the best firewall against the propaganda virus.

I applaude your efforts here - I wish more people knew of these forms of manipulation. But, unfortunately, it's simply easier for most to believe what they want to believe - one can simply claim that "the media is liberal" and far too many will agree without any proof. But there are a few of us who recognize what is really going on (and no, that's not some conspiracy theory claim).

BTW - nice reference to Plato's "Allegory of the Cave".

fox news. if you listen to hannity and o'reily for just one show you will hear several lies, such as clinton did nothing for the economy or bush spends more on education. its a right wing propoganda machine. im tired of people saying cnn and the other channels are liberal. these channels have just as many conservatives as liberals such as tucker carlson and scarbough.

What else can you say, excep that perhaps people like Bonehead O'Rielly should be fined for diseminating untruths as news.
