Fish - January 2007

I have a flathead catfish (that I feed shrimp pellets, earthworms, and minnows) All of a sudden I notice baby snails, 5 of them.
Where did they come from? I'm baffled....

I've had a betta for 4 months I have him in a 1/2 bowl. I feed him flakes and dried worms and pellets. We change his water by putting him in a little cup while water changing. I also think the water is around 67 degree F. We use tap water. Can you give me some advice on how I can do things differently and if i should feed him different foods and what I need an all thanks

I want to find a bunch of freshwater fish that look saltwater for my fake saltwater tank. I am getting fake corals, sea anenomes, starfish, sea urchin, backgrounds, everything to make my tank look like a saltwatertank. I want bright, peacefull community fish, no cichlids or oscars please! I have purchased 2 Kissing fish (Kissing Gourami's) 2 weeks ago. 1 of them is darting around the tank constanly (when the light is on) the other seems to appear sick (laying on it's side at times) but, it also will dart MANY times throughout the day but then will return to the bottom seeming like it lays dieing. But, as I said before, when I think I need to "net" and humanly anethitize it it resumes a vigorous swim for an hour an go back to the laying on it's side for hours after.
Do I have a sick fish, or is this normal behavior with this species?

I am doing a fishless cycle of my ten gallon aquarium(by adding clear ammonia). I've set everything up and I really don't like how fake plants look so i've added about 5 live plants. The tank just reached the nitrite spike. I know that plants use ammonia. I also know that if the bacteria forming in the filter can die if they don't get any ammonia. Is it possible for the bacteria to die from the plants taking all the ammonia or am I just worrying for nothing.

I saw tetra goldfish in the petstore. I forget what kind they were called but they had like a blue glowing stripe on their side and they were small. Does anyone know what kind they are called? and where i could get some information on them? are they freshwater or saltwater?

My grandfather died about a year ago, he was a fish expert! The thing is he left if I wanted I believe a 30 gallon tank, with stand, gravel, filter, everything! The only thing is everything is covered in mouse droppings! The stand, all the boxes! Everything has mouse droppings, but the tank. Could I clean everything really well, and still use the tank and all the stuff? Or would I be better off buying a new tank, new stuff? Did the mouse droppings ruin it? I believe that the tank has been sitting in the basement for at least 10 years, and I think he had it for another 20 years, so the stuff is probably old too. Its a nice tank, oak wood stand and lid. Also, what fish could I put in it. I want to do a tropical community tank, this would be the largedt tank I've ever had. I help all my nieghbors with their tanks, but I am no fish expert. If possible, I want to be able to keep a female betta in there to.
PLease Help!!!!!!
