I have purchased 2 Kissing fish (Kissing Gourami's) 2 weeks ago. 1 of them is darting around the tank constanly (when the light is on) the other seems to appear sick (laying on it's side at times) but, it also will dart MANY times throughout the day but then will return to the bottom seeming like it lays dieing. But, as I said before, when I think I need to "net" and humanly anethitize it it resumes a vigorous swim for an hour an go back to the laying on it's side for hours after.
Do I have a sick fish, or is this normal behavior with this species?

First off ... I am not a novice when it comes to Aquarium keeping (5 years). Yes I have live plants. I keep the PH at or around 7.0. I test my tank evey 2 weeks and immediatly after a water change (20% every 3 weeks) then I check for ammonia, and with the conditioner I use it has been 0 so far. I keep my new fish quarentined for atleast 4 days before introducing them to the community. I have 9 fish (including the Kissing) and none have shown aggression in a 45 gallon tank.
So so much for the 3rd grade answers.
Sorry for sounding short, but all I was asking if this is normal behavior. I never kept Kissing Fish B4.

It's not normal for a kissing gourami. They are general swimming around. I'd suspect his swim bladder isn't working. This could have been caused by injury, or disease. There really isn't a cure, but it's not lethal in an of itself. I've had a dwarf gourami survive 3 months like this. Dissection upon death revealed a large growth. (I think it depressed his swin bladder.) As long as he can continue to reach the surface for air, and is able to feed he has a fighting chance. A friend did have a double tailed betta who suffered from constipation who had similar issues. He generally recovered after being fed a peeled cooked pea.

The fish are sick. Was the tank cycled? Add a double dose of cycle and waste control and turn up the aeration.

If no improvement in 3 days, repost with size of tank, males or females, what other tankmates, type of filter, type of decorations in tank, amount of time lights are on, temp. maintainence

Also have your water tested and post the specs.

Though I'm thinking parasite.

Your fish is either extremely stressed or your ammonia levels might be high, Fish don't have 100% guarantee they will live when purchased that why the pet stores usually give a 7 day grantee sometimes the stress of the move is just to much for them to handle.

Just remember that the kissing fish are gouramis and they need live green plants in the tank to survive! I learned this the hard way when I couldnt keep them alive at all then someone mentioned that they need plants to eat in the tank!

Definitely sick. Did you use dechlorinator when you added the water? Is the tank large enough? Is your temperature right? What about pH? And do you use a normal day/night light cycle? If you are doing all of these things right, it is a disease or parasite. If you are not doing all of these things, you are not a good fish owner.
