Fish - January 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

I recently got a 30 gallon fish tank and found out that my fish have ick – one of them must have come from the store with it and has infected my whole tank. I have been treating them for 4 days now and most of them have cleared up but one fish is getting progressively worse. The spots on his body are mostly gone – but he has cloudy white covering his eyes. Does he need to be removed from the tank or can I leave him in and keep treating the entire tank for ick? I don’t know if this matters but it is a fresh water tank – the infected fish is a tiger oscar – African cichlid. What are the effects on the fish from having ick?

just set up a 10 gallon tank and have already added plants. Unfortunetly:

1) I bought two species of plants that were Petco Aqua plants and I swere I think they just made the names up because I can't find any information on them

2) I finally found some info on the plants and it turns out they are not actually aquatic plants

3) Since they are not really aquatic plants of course they aren't ment for underwater life and they will die soon

**4) Luckily I scored one half-wrongly marked java fern (by chance. They did correctly throw "fern" into their made-up name)

Anyway, after all of these let downs I am finally ready to try the planted aquarium thing again. I thought I should go to the fish store knowing what I want this time so...

What easy to care for (and hardy) plants do you recommend for my 10 gallon tank? I want something that will provide cover for the cherry barbs and zebra danios I am going to add(once the cycle is over. It's taking for ever )

I bought 2 potted plants for my 30 gallon aquarium. Within a week, the tank was filled with tiny snails. I don't want them but I can't get rid of them. I removed everthing from the tank (except the fish - 10 danios and 1 male beta fish) to prevent the snails from breeding. That didn't work, their eggs stick to the sides of the glass. I plucked the snails out 1 by 1. For several days, we were snail-free. I put the plants back in, and guess what?! More snails. This time I tossed the plants and the snails died within a couple of days. But they had already laid more eggs, so here we go again. How can I get rid of them for good? I have resigned myself to the fact that I will only have plastic plants from now on.

I have this neon, which i've kept in my little tiny dorm room 1 gal. aquarium all by himself for the past year. He doesn't seem lonely, but sometimes i think he might like a fishy friend. So I was thinking about taking him back to my parents house and put him in a bigger tank with some more fish. Should i just get one more neon so he'd have someone like himself or more. 2 in the big tank would leave the tank pretty empty, but if i put a whole bunch of neons that grew up together in a store aquarium where i would buy them at would all know each other. And my fish wouldn't have that much in common with them. Would he fit in to the group of strangers- could it be alot of stress on my little guy. Or would it be better to get a fish that isn't a neon and let them be friends. What kind of other fish would be good to put with him? Or should I just leave him by himself because i'm crazy for thinking my fish might be lonesome.

I have bought a house in the same city that i currently live in. I have a 35 gallon aquarium with a 5inch long Red Devil fish. THe movers refuse to move the aquarium, which is ok because i really feel more comfortable doing this myself and the tank will fit in my back seat, but how do i protect my fish? I am afraid that i will cause him too much stress with the water changes, transfering him and transporting him. Please help, i have had him for a few years now. Please let me know if i left out any important information. Thanks so much for your help!

Why is it that when you beat a dog, you've committed animal cruelty but when you catch a fish on a hook (for fun), and let it go, its legal? And considered a sport.........

I just got a brand new 1 gallon fish tank. When I set that tank up I also set up another 1 gallon that I have had. They both now have bubbles to the point that they are overflowing. I haven't added the fish yet because I was waiting on them to stabalize. Now I'm afraid to add them in case the tank is unsafe. I never had this problem before with the older 1 gallon and I've never had this problem with my 10 gallon. There is nothing that I can think of... I don't use soap when washing them, I use fresh distiled water. If there is anything that you can think of please help! I really need to get my new fish into their tanks.
