I suggest you buy a used tank. It'll be about half the price as a new one and oftentimes they come with all sorts of extras like filters, heaters, etc.
Look on craigslist.com, ebay.com, and check your local classifieds and your local fish club.

Do your research!! Wal-Mart will have the best price on just the tank, but then you need the gravel, stand, light, bio-filter, heater, etc which add up. Try your local pet stores and see what kind of kits they have or sales. I went out to buy a 55 gal tank so I could have a rope fish and ended up with a 120 gallon when a local Pet-Smart was remodelling and was selling it for $280 tank, lighting and stand. Careful though, seemed like a great deal until I was forced to buy a $250 Fluval FX5 for it and 130 lbs of gravel. Before we got that one I was going to go with my local Jack's Aquarium which have entire kits ready-to-go with everything you need. They seem more expensive then Wal-Mart but when you add up all the components you need at Wal-Mart they may be less expensive. There are some great deals so do your research.

I have learned that Petco is the best place as long as you can find it on sale. They have the most complete kits. Whatever you do don;t get one at wal-mart. Their kits are designed so that you have to but something extra.
