I have this neon, which i've kept in my little tiny dorm room 1 gal. aquarium all by himself for the past year. He doesn't seem lonely, but sometimes i think he might like a fishy friend. So I was thinking about taking him back to my parents house and put him in a bigger tank with some more fish. Should i just get one more neon so he'd have someone like himself or more. 2 in the big tank would leave the tank pretty empty, but if i put a whole bunch of neons that grew up together in a store aquarium where i would buy them at would all know each other. And my fish wouldn't have that much in common with them. Would he fit in to the group of strangers- could it be alot of stress on my little guy. Or would it be better to get a fish that isn't a neon and let them be friends. What kind of other fish would be good to put with him? Or should I just leave him by himself because i'm crazy for thinking my fish might be lonesome.

Well, neons are schooling fish and should definitely always be in schools of at least 5, so he is lonesome right now. Don't worry, I'm sure he'll get to know his new friends in no time, although he might be a little shy at first - neons are a friendly bunch :)
1 gallon is of course too small for a school of neons, something like 8 or 10 gallons with 5-6 neons would be perfect.

Poor guy. I'm surprised he's alive. Neons like to be in groups.

I'm all for "getting to know" your fish, but the neon's really won't know who came from where within a few minutes of you bringing new ones into the tank. They don't care. Come on - they are fish. They don't need to have anything "in common".

It might just freak him out at first because as far as he knew he was the only fish in the world. It shouldn't take long, though, for him to adapt.

Either take your little friend to a bigger tank with other new friends, or put in 2 more neons with him.

Better yet, buy a 5 gallon tank and add in 6-8 more neons. Happy schooling fish....

Neon tetras are a schooling fish and should only be kept with 6 or more of them in a tank. Add that one and get at least 5 more and add them all to the bigger tank, if it is big enough then you can add some other fish.

Get more neons. They are schooling fish. They like to be together. They're fun to watch as they zip around the tank together
