My koi did this, just be careful it might eat gravel and choke on it, thats what sasley happened to my koi. But it would eat any thing even if it didn't fit it it's mouth! the pleco and including other koi as well. He grew to be a 1 foot koi and died on a pebble that he ate outside in the pond.

For the most part they are OK with other fish but if they are smaller then the kois mouth there is always a chance that they will get eaten. 55 gallons is way too small to keep those fish in there long term so I am hoping they are just in there for the winter and when spring comes they will go out to a very large pond. They actually need more like 250 gallons per fish, not 30-40 like Venice girl says, koi can grow up to 3 feet long and most 30 gallon tanks are only 3 feet long. Once the fish moves out to the pond he may be fine with other fish and he may feel cramped, even though it may not look like it, in that tank and wants more space so he goes after the other fish.

My question is, what are you going to do with your three small koi when they turn into three large koi? When koi get full grown, they need to be allowed at least 30-40 gallons of water per fish. Are you prepared for that? Anyway, the koi are not "cannibalistic by nature. Like Dorsey's Wife said, they just mistook it for food. Comets are a high energy fish. Much more so than koi. They will be the boss in any water environment, but, not attack/injure aggressive, even when they tend to be a little smaller. Of course, not snack-size small!

I have owned koi for many years and mine have never been aggressive or eaten other fish, but they have always been with fish of similar size. Goldfish and koi CAN eat other fish if they are small enough to fit in their mouth. While these fish are normally not that way, and are normally very peaceful, they may mistake small fish for tasty morsels and just gobble them up. As for me ever seeing a koi or goldfish that would bite other fish, out of aggression..no..I have never.

you have better get the comet out of the same tank as the koi because i seen alot of koi suck out all kinds of goldfish eyes. a koi will not harm another koi but the koi will suck out the goldfish's eye out. i have seen it happen more than once!!
