I have a white goldfish, a larger sized one with a long floaty tail. Anyway he all of a sudden has red around his mouth and it almost looks like an open sore. Anyone know what may cause this?

I found out that the goldfish was not even a goldfish but was a MOLLY anyway he had a fungus or rot? He died before I got the treatment but I treated the tank for the rest of the fish and they seem to be O.K. Thanks everyone for the help, I know if I have a question about anything you will always come thru!

Columnaris maybe? http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/hdcolumn.htm

It's a possibility, but I don't think it is what you have. Is there anything in the tank it could have hurt itself on? What do you feed it?

Our goldfish had similar symptoms. I went to the pet store, and they sold me some aquarium salt and Mela-Fix (antibacterial remedy for fresh and saltwater aquarium fish). I followed the directions (one rounded tablespoon of the salt for each 5 gallons, only once; and 1 tsp. of the Mela-Fix for every 10 gallons, daily, for 7 days. . .). The result? Our plecostomus died first. He hadn't even seemed sick. Died on Christmas day. Broke my daughter's heart. They're her fish. Then, we proceeded to witness the slow death of one of the goldfish. A friend advised me to just flush it down the stool and put it out of it's misery. I didn't. I waited. It was very sad. She had had these fish for over a year, and they had gotten very large for the 10 gallon tank. So, day before yesterday I decided to completely empty out the tank for a good cleaning. I figured it would either stress the last remaining fish to death, or give him a fighting chance against whatever had killed his former tank-mates. I threw out the decorative gravel and boiled the few rocks and shells before putting them back in. I cleaned everything else thoroughly with vinegar and rinsed well. Then we let everything air dry before starting over as if it were a whole new tank. Today, our last fish *seems* better! I hope so! Only time will tell, but the sore is much smaller, and the red streaks are disappearing.
Good luck!
