Fish - January 2007

I know you use it for helping the fish keep their electrolites, and helping them regenerate their fins if the've been damaged, but the carton says to use it when you set up a new tank. what are the real benifits of using aquarium salt (for freshwater tanks), and can it hurt your goldfish? or any other fish for that matter? thanks in advance!!

also, i read on a vet's website that aquarium salt can kill ich, because it bursts the bug's cells wide open. has anyone done that and what were your results?

I need help with naming my essay. I did a descriptive, step-by-step essay about setting up a freshwater aquarium, including the process of the nitrogen cycle. Now all I have left is a title and I'm stumped! I need lots and lots of suggestions!! =)

Thanks, Amanda

I know a goldfish can live in a bowl as long as the water is changed 2 times a week, but what about oxygen? How can I be sure that the fish is getting enough air?

Rude people need not reply.

I saw these guys at a petco (yea i know, don't hate me), and they're really pretty little fish. Info on the tank said they are good beginner fish. Has anyone heard of them? Would they be a good starter fish for a small tank? If not, what are some small colorful starter fish? i'd like something kinda hardy since I'm pretty new to fishkeeping and would hate to kill them off right away.

Thanks!

1st part: I have been fishless cycling my 120 gallon tank for 5 weeks. I checked today and finally there are no Nitrites and very little ammonia. I checked the NitrAtes (which were 160+ 10 days ago) and it was zero! I will check to confirm this tomorrow, but what happened to all the NitrAtes?

2nd part: I want to wait one more week to start adding fish. Over a couple months I want to end up with these fish:
6 cory cats
6 Angels
3 Bala Sharks
6 Saerpe Tetra (spelling?)
3 Pictus Catfish
2 Rope Fish

Does any of that sound like it really wont work? And do the rope fish have to be fed live feeder fish?

I got a used 55 gallon tank from someone and have got it set up and am running the filter for a day or 2 before getting the actual fish. I haven't filled the whole tank with water since i have to put the decorations in it still but whats is happening is the top of the water if becoming foamy. Is it from the extra air from the waterfall effect from the fitler or could it be from if the last person had it as a salt water tank or what could it be from?

My guppies are acting more strange than usual. I have a 20 gallon tank set up as a winter time haven for my small tropical fish. In summer they thrive in an outdoor pond. This particular aquarium has been set up for about 3 months now. The guppies are mixed in with many Mollies, also breeers and a few cordroy(?) catfish who are the tank janitors. There are fish in all developmental stages within the tank. I just cleared up a fungal infection with Melaffix, which worked great but my Guppies are now swimming erratically, either spiralling quickly, swimming upside down, "scraping" themselves on the bottom etc....It seems that the affected are starting this at maybe a month or 6 weeks of age and older. I do regular water changes. I feed live brine shrimp as a supplement. I have added "Shimmy blocks" within the last week to help condition the water, but ammonia levels and ph are kept under tight control anyway and the mollies and catfish seem fine. Help!

OK, here's my funny short story.

I once only had (1) algae eater in my 50 gallon aquarium and a couple of my friends asked me why I did not have any other fish in my tank.

So I decided to buy me some Mollies (2) white ones and (1) orange one.

Anyway, they were doing just fine, minding their own business when I noticed 16 new babies swimming near the gravel 2 weeks later. OK, so fast forward to today... it's been about 2 months since I bought the parents and now I have 40+ baby Mollies in my fish tank. Yikes!!! :(

I know they are live-bearers, but now I am getting scared as to what to do with the babies. I asked our local pet shop if they would buy them from me, but they said no, due to store policies.

I will try to give some of them away to some friends, but I am afraid, my "very happy fish" will be giving birth to even more babies.

Does anyone know if "fish" can be fixed?? LOL :-) Or does anyone have a solution besides getting rid of the momma/poppas??

My one year old flowerhorn fish looks like she's peeling. Is this normal?? She seems fine at times, but there are times when I find her sulking in one corner of her aquarium. Her water's clean, her appetite's good. What's the matter with her??

I was told to get rid of some but how many (adult max size will be 4-5 inches) 4 are 4in, 20 are 2-2.5 inc the rest smaller with 4small fry. I've had this for a week and have done 2 15 gal water changes and the ph and amonia levels are ok. Can I leave it like this?

I had an established aquarium & I tried adding Topsoil to the substrate to make it more plant friendly, but with water in the tank... Its made a big brown mess out of the water, where the light penetrates about 4 inches into the water & Nothing is visible.

I've done 2 50% water changes, and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. The penetration of the light is still at about 4 inches.

I've Been stuffing the filters full of polyfiber and changing it every few hours. The polyfiber has been coming out brown, and there doesn't seem to be any progress in the clarity of the water. There is about 1 inch of semi-visibility.

I'm afraid my fish will not be able to see their food and will starve in a few days if I don't find a solution. Should I try using up the micron cartridges for my magnum filter?

We found my son's goldfish which is about a year and a half old (?) apparently stuck down inside a volcano decoration this morning. He was still barely breathing so we dumped him out, but he is very limp and floats toward the surface. He would swim just a little every few minutes, but then float back toward the suface, laying on his side and his tail drooping down. I don't expect him to still be alive when we get home tonight, but if by some miracle he is, is there anything we can do to nurse him back to health? He lives in a 10-gallon tank with three tetras and a very large plecostomus (6"), which I now read is probably too small a space for him. Please help - both my boys are traumatized! Thank you!
