What kind of fish?

indeed, what kind of fish? it varies from fish to fish, and only livebearers "have babies", the rest lay eggs.

and why 3" of gravel? that sounds like too much to me, unless you have a planted tank, 1" is fine, too much gravel and waste builds up underneath and mucks up your tanks water parameters.

just saw your edit, oscars are egglayers, they need a big tank (75-90 US gallons minimum), only adults will spawn successfully (so a 10" adult or so). From what i've seen they put their eggs on a flat surface such as a piece of slate and aggressively guard them.

Depends on the breed.

Guppies can have babies at about 2 months.

Convicts can have babies at about 7 months.

Oscars take over a year. The males will get a hump on their head & by that time they'll be huge.
