We have had him for 1 1/2 years at hollywood video. He is in a small bowl, in which he has lived in since the beginning. He doesn't have any signs of tail rot or fin rot (whichever it is). He doesn't swim around and he spends most of his time at the bottom of the bowl. He also hasn't been eating. Is it just old age for a betta, or is there anything we can do? thanks for any help.

I just set up my tank a couple of weeks ago and put my first fish in about a week ago. My levels are all pretty good except water hardness because the water is very hard in my area. I was going to look at getting a water softner product but somethings I read about certain tropicals say that they actually prefer a harder water.
Should I bother to address this and if so what products or ideas are good for bringing this level down?

I bought this self aerating decoration for my tank a lobster that opens up his mouth and blows bubbles out. I just set it up last night but it makes quite a disturbance in the tank and seems to freak out the fish so I shut the pump off. Will the fish get used to that or should I just leave it off?

I currently have a small gold fish (about 2 inches) in a one gallon tank and I'm thinking about putting him in a ten gallon aquarium and adding a another fish. The general rule I've seen is that for every 1" of goldfish you should have 2 gallons. Right now I have a undergravel filter and a hood with a light. If I get a ten gallon tank will i need to purchase a small heater or will the fish be fine with out one? also, I've been looking at filters for a ten gallon tank and I don't know if I should get a power filter or an internal filter. I don't really want to stick with the undergravel filter because it doesn't work well. Next, I've been looking at hoods online and I can't tell if they have the appropriate opening for a power filter, do most of them have an opening? and lastly if I have a filter do i still need the pump and air stones so that my fish has bubbles? I don't know how essential the bubbles really are but for now it's just the filter system. It's alot I know. Thanks
