Bettas are tropical fish. The water needs to be no lower than 72 degrees Farenheight, but ideally 78 degrees. You can buy small fishtank heaters suitable for a bowl for about 5 bucks at any supermarket or pet suppy store. You will need a thermometer as well; I keep a nifty little one on my tank that is as thin as a peice of paper, and just sticks to the inside of the glass.

Also, be sure that there is no chlorine in the water- this will kill fish! Use a chlorine removing liquid every time you change the water (if there is no filter in the bowl, this will have to be about once a week), or use DISTILLED water you can buy in jugs at the grocery store. Filtered water still has chlorine in it.

These are tropical Fish and Need to be in at least room temp water, as long as room temp isnt cold. I have three betta and I clean their tanks every other day. I buy filtered gallon jugs of water and then just get them refilled at refill stations for like 33 cents a gallon. I do this on a rotating schedule with 6 gallon jugs. I wait a day after I buy the water by just letting it sit and get to a good temp. Then I put a few drops of Aqua Safe in the water as well.

The best thing to do is think about how you would like to be treated if you were a fish. Have you ever felt great about getting into a cold shower? Of course not. The shock could kill, and does kill fish.

So be careful and hopefully your little guy is ok.

First, make sure that you trear the water with a dechlorinator (like "start right") or let it sit a day in an open container to make sure the chlorine dissapates from the water. Regarding water temperature, I believe that Bettas like 74 to 78 degrees Farenheight water the best. They can survive into the lower 60 degrees farenheight, but become sluggish at those temperatures.

Also, it's advisable to adjust temperature slowly if possible, because quick temperature changes are often very stressful on fish. Your local library will have some good books on keeping Bettas to give you more information.

Good luck

I have had several Bettas. I even tried to breed a pair, without luck. Bettas are hardy fish. Buy a thermomiter at your local wall-mart in the fish section. It will have a green area in the range from about 70 to 80 degrees. You can use this to check the temp of the new water. Or just have a milk jug and fill it the night before you want to change the water and let it set and the temp will become room temp. make sure to rinse out the milk jug and keep detergents away from the jug. Another thing if you have well water your ok but if your water is treated the clorine must be removed before putting your fish in it or the fish will die. You can solve this two ways. One is to let the water set in the milk jug for 24 hours. Another is to buy clorine removal drops at wall-mart. cost is about $2.50.

Bettas prefer tropical temperatures, somewhere in the 70-80's range, they don't last long when the temp. drops into the 60's. You should get a heater in the betta tank, just in case the temp. decides to drop a little too low. BTW, people say bettas aren't picky, but Bettas come from rice paddies, so the temp. should be in the tropical range.
