a) feed him the right food (Beta food is best for his colors)
b) don't put him with any other fish, he will kill them - especially another beta!
c) don't stress him out too much by holding a mirror up to his container so that he shows off his fins and assume aggressive posture
d) do a water change once a week, make sure that you are using the right water. If you have city water, let it sit out for about two days to let the chlorine out. If you have well water, you may want to think about using bottled water instead of well water (well water killed some of my fish before I learned my lesson). Either bottled water, or get some of the chemicals to put in there to even it up.
e) don't worry about an air stone, they will take in air from teh water's surface.
If he starts blowing bubbles, that is good, it means he is happy and making a nest. Don't worry about getting him a friend, he will only kill her after a while.
Good luck!

Use the Betta fish food, it comes in a plastic container and they are small brown pellets! DO NOT give it any other fish food besides the Betta food they will not eat it. Also, don't put it together with another Betta fish because they are very teratorial. They will flare up and this will cause stress. They could possibly even kill eachother.

Just make sure to change his water frequently, use spring water or tap water that has been sitting out for at least 24 hours and feed him Beta food. Don't put him in with any other fish unless you have checked first with the pet store to make sure they are compatible. Feed him once a day just a few pellets (he'll keep eating if you keep feeding him, you don't want to overfeed) and change his water maybe once a week.

Betas are easy taken care of.
They eat Beta food, the food says beta on the container, they are very small pellets. they only consume about 4-5 of those about 2x a day. they dont need a filter, or light. Do not put them by a window it causes to much algea in the bowl.
Change the water about 2x a week. If u still need help u can e-mail me

Breeding bettas isn't for the faint of middle. It is probably one of the tricky methods I have ever heard of. (NEVER performed it in no way wiill) You need to have room for: a tank for the spawning and a health facility tank for the feminine to get better in - she needs to be eliminated after the eggs are layed (and now not again right into a tank with another fish - via herself); a tank for the male if he's nonetheless somewhat at the competitive aspect - you would not wish him to kill a different fish; THEN after the fry begin to develop you need to discover the male fry and positioned each and every considered one of them of their possess box and feature it constant in order that the temperature to the feminine tank and the entire little male boxes keep consistent and the entire tanks and boxes need to be saved EXTREMELY blank in order that the fish don't grow to be deformed. Fins will develop in poor health-formed or stubby if the water parameter don't seem to be saved as nearly excellent as you'll be able to preserve them. My phrases can't start to give an explanation for what the activity goes to be like. Unless you've gotten plenty of time to your fingers, and nearly limitless area for the entire tanks and gear it'll be nearly unattainable to elevate the little beauties to adulthood. I have no idea why everybody thinks it might be so pleasant to reproduce bettas!! They don't seem to be a few lovely little toy and it is extremely difficult paintings and harmful for each dad and mom with them being so aggessive. Let individuals who have the gear and time and do it for a residing or no less than as a major enterprise do the breeding! It is far larger to discover a fish that's now not so tempermental and competitive to reproduce in the event you wish teenagers.

i had a beta fish for about 5 years....
get him a fairly large glass vase or fish bowl to swim around in. i feel so sad for the fish that are in those tiny little jars and bowls.
wal-mart has some great glass containers in their craft department (that's where i got mine!).
use spring water when changing his water. i know some people used tap water, but i can't recommend it. i always bought gallon jugs of spring water at wal-mart.
i fed my guy tetra brand beta flakes. i think it was tetra brand.
look in the pet department for the round yellow flake food. i beleive it says it's for betas and/or tetras to give bright color...something along those lines.
i gave my guy a little pinch every morning.
it was about the same time each day, so he was in a happy routine.
when the gravel (i used glass marbles from the craft dept at wal-mart) gets dirty looking, then use a net to put your beta in a sperate bowl, empty the water out of the bowl and wash off the gravel. i used tap water when cleaning out the bowl...just water, no cleaning products.
then when it was all clean, i put in spring water and put the beta back in and he was happy!
don't set him too close to a window that gets direct sun...i had a friend kill his from too much sun. it cooked the poor thing.
they are pretty basic to take care of. just use spring water and i'm sure you'll be fine!!
take care and your little friend too!

Simply put..
keep him alone
feed him beta food according to directions
keep his water clean
try to resist agitating him (don't put your finger against the glass)
give him a good balance of light and dark
they don't need much room or a filter, but it won't hurt them
