Or does it allow for too much "subjectivity"???

Standards which have wording such as "moderate", "medium", as relates to substance,etc...

Do you see a greater difference in the type of dogs in breeds where there aren't any DQs??

And it's not the AKC...while they approve any changes made, it's NOT the AKC that writes the breed standards.

So, What entity/group preserves and is responsible for YOUR breed's standard?

Most English and American breeds were bred for looks as well as working ability, so a breed standard makes sense.

But what of breeds that were traditionally bred for working ability regardless of their looks, such as the Border Collie, Tibetan Mastiff, Rat Terrier, etc.?

Does creating a breed standard for these breeds promote or destroy their essential breed identity?

My friend recently got a small terrier breed puppy. It is four months old. She says that ever since she got him from the pet store, he has been trying to eat his own poop right as he is going to the bathroom. My friend said she usually just tells him 'no' in a stern tone and pushes his head away from his butt. However, he keeps doing it. She and her boyfriend take the puppy for walks everyday and have a spot for him to got to the bathroom.

Does anyone have any idea why the puppy might be doing this and ways to help make it stop? I suggested to her that the only time I have heard of house pets, especially dogs and cats, eating their own poop regularly is because of a lack of a steady and nutritious diet. She says that she has been feeding him clean and fresh water and puppy grade dog food everyday though.

My poodle gets lots of ear infections. I used dermalone on his ears. The one I had expired and he needs some more. We have moved out of state and with my work schedule I'm unable to get him in to the vet. (I work 8 to 5). Is there any way we can get this refilled without a vet visit (which costs a lot also) since we already know that we need it?

Do you know what health/genetic issues are prevalent in your breed?

How do you justify NOT health testing?

To the "wanna breeders", do you realize the heartache you inflict on buyers when they realize their dog has a disease that could have been prevented if you had cared more about your breeding stock than the almighty dollar???

he has had a couple of ear infections and each time the vet prescibes this medication to put in his ear. some one told me he could be allergic to some kind of food. the groomer has been told not to pluck or get his ears wet. that didn't help. some suggestions would be very helpful. he is 5 years old and not neutered. doesn't eat dog food..hates it. i have tried several brands to no avail. he eats potatos, carrots and all meat as well as tuna salmon and loves fish. his treats are dog biscuits and doggy pork chop shape treats.sometimes a hot dog a small piece of bologna.

Had a 2 year old doberman very loving, obediaent, and smart for 1.5 years. Rescued when 7 months and had biten and would be un ruley when he got too stimulated about something. Did serious training and turned to be best dog every. One day started chasing sounds of traffic along my cement wall barking and get into a red zone. Started correcting by holding fur under chin and gently laying on ground till calm. Last week very bad high and as soon as I touched him he attacked me for approx a minute in a rage leaving me with very serious injuries. I had to put him down, always in my mind he had this potential against others but am very confused and still love him. I think it was his breeding since I traced it back to a well known puppy mill who specializes in size (King Dobies). I would like to get around this issue I am in turmoil over this. He was the best dog . 2 weeks prior he started destrying his toys even a Kong to piesces. Indication but didnt see it coming.

Ok. I have 2 puppys. I feed them both Science Diet puppy food. One was born in March ('07) and the other in October ('07). You stop feeding your dog puppy food at one year, right? Why? What is going to happen if my younger one eats adult food? I just don't know much about dog food and need some help.

I decided not to have my puppy nuetered. He's right around 7 months old and a 3/4 shih tzu 1/4 pkgnese(SP) mix. The vet said that if I wasn't going to "use" him for mating purposes then he needed to be nuetered because later in his life he could develope testicular problems and maybe even cancer.

I don't intend on letting him mate.. BUT.. (this is the gross part) he has this stuffed lion twice his size that he just loooooves to go to town on. He will hump that thing to the point of exhaustion probably 4 times a day. I figured it was better than having him hump my arm.. or leg.. ect. I think he pretends its another dog because he rough plays with it, grooms it, and sleeps with it when he's not with me.

So, my question is: Is my dog old enough to be mating? Can "releasing" on his lion be the same as doggy sex? ..meaning if it is I won't have to worry so much about probs later from not being nuetered?

Thanks for your help. Any advice or stories is appreciated!!

My dog and 2 cats haven't had fleas in five plus years but just got them recently. What's the most effective natural, inexpensive remedy to get rid of them? I've been giving him a garlic pill the past few days, along with sprinkling garlic on my cats' food but they don't like it very much and he's still scratching. Is adding apple cidar vinegar, a capful a day in a large dish of water harmful to them?

What made you choose your breed over a breed very similar to yours or another breed in the same group as yours?

While some dogs in the working group may be well suited for specific tasks, there are many breeds that are well suited for agillity, competitive obedience or herding.

Unless you chose your breed for the sole purpose of performing a specific task, why is your breed more well suited for you than others who are very similar? What makes your Border Collie a better companion than an Austalian Shepherd? Your Labrador Retriever a better companion than a Golden Retriever? Your Husky a better companion than a Malamute?

Please don't answer if the value you hold for your breed lies within popularity, appearance or portability.

I got my puppy from a shelter one week ago, and boy does she stink. She was infested with flees, we gave her advantage, that took care of that. Now I just want to wash her, but our vet said to wait a little longer......She Stinks! I really want to wash her.

our new neighbor's dog barks with a very squeaky high sound. Have no idea what r they doing with the dog, but 1-6am (!!!) that dog barks like crazy. Also, may be they're keeping dog in a cage or something like that, but it sounds like dog tries to get out of it and you can hear that cage (?) banging against the wall!! and that room is right below our bedroom!

That is adult dog, I would understand if it was a puppy in training...but this one, I just had enough of it....

I'm ready to buy this: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751312&cp=2767032.2767085&view=all&fbn=Taxonomy%7CTraining+%26+Behavior&f=Taxonomy%2FPET%2F2767085&fbc=1&parentPage=family&keepsr=1

But, our other neighbor, very nice lady, has 2 cats! I just don't want this device to hurt other animals.....

Anybody knows how that device works? Any other suggestions how to calm that dog down??

Thanks!!! :)
