I got my puppy from a shelter one week ago, and boy does she stink. She was infested with flees, we gave her advantage, that took care of that. Now I just want to wash her, but our vet said to wait a little longer......She Stinks! I really want to wash her.

An oatmeal shampoo is great for pups with flaky dry skin. If she's that nasty, don't wait. Go ahead and bathe her. Just make sure to dry her well and keep her in a warm place afterwards. Keep up on the monthly flea preventative, and switch her to a super-premium food like Innova, Canidae, Wellness, etc. Her skin and coat will improve miraculously. Best of luck to you and your new baby girl!

You need to leave the Advantage on for at least a week so it can be totally absorbed into the skin to keep killing the fleas. Then you need to buy a puppy shampoo. I like Fresh and Clean by Lambert Kay. Petsmart has a whole list of shampoos you get buy. Here's the link to give you some ideas.

If the vet is telling you to wait, it could be to let the advantage take full effect or if she was spayed it is to let her heal first (water and shampoo could actually break her stitches or cause infection to seep in). Ask him if you can use a dry, spray shampoo and then brush carefully for now. When you can give that first bath - we always recommend oatmeal shampoo and a good lanolin based coat conditioner. Thank you sooo much for rescuing and I know you will just love your new best friend. GOOD LUCK!

You need to wait at least 2 days after dosing her with the advantage. AFter that, run to petco or petsmart or your local doggy supplie place, and pick you up some shampoo that says for dry skin, safe for puppies.

Get something from the VET and if he wants you to wait, get some of the powder that you sprinkle on and brush out. Dogs need very gentle shampoo. Shampoo for horses works great because they also have extremely sensitive skin.

Luck with your new family member. For good dog advise see: http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/

My puppy had the same problem. He had such dry skin that he would scratch raw spots on himself. When we took him to the vet they gave us Earthbath. The label says, "Totally Natural Pet Shampoo" it has tea tree oil and aloe vera. I washed my puppy with it just twice and the spots went away and he doesn't scratch as much.

Well listen to the vet, but what's the reason to wait? Oatmeal is great for skin and smells wonderful, when the vet says is safe. Make sure says safe for pups.

I use Hertz, they have different scents for different conditions and they all work great. My personal choise is purple your dog will smell great and it last for around 5 days and slowly fades she will be very soft and it treats dry skin.
