Normally I would say "no"....too soon, but as you have stated, she is an elderly woman which would stay in bed. All of us 'need' a reason to live. I would give her a couple of days to mourn and then have her husband give her a little lap buddy for Christmas. Maybe have a red bow around her neck.

It would probably be better to give her some grieving time before getting a new dog. Help her focus on the good memories of her pet and what she really remembers as being funny or cute about her. If she isn't ready, she just won't love the new dog. You can never replace one with another but rather find a new friend to help the empty space in your heart (but each person's timing is different). What you could do is encourage her to start volunteering with a rescue or shelter in the area. That way, when she meets the right one or is ready to go searching, you will all know. Another thing that might work is fostering but it is hard to give them up sometimes and she might get more depressed. These are good websites for animal lovers who are grieving: www.petloss.com/ or www.ChancesSpot.org

yes but wait at least a week or two. you must let her grieve for her best friend first. go through pictures with her to remember good memories of her. give her a condolence card and tell her what the little dog meant to you. tell her that it will get better with time and in a week or so then get her a new puppy, people who are dog lovers cant refuse the beauty of animals and iam sure they will get along just fine. it will also take her mind off the sadness. i know it happened to me

That really depends on your friend. Some people need a little time to get over the loss of a pet before adopting a new one -when my Golden died I wasn't ready for another dog for nearly six months- but some people need to have another dog in their lives almost immediately. Talk to your friend and let HER deside if she wants another dog. If her hubby gets her one when she's not ready he may only be adding bitterness and guilt to his wife's sadness.

It's a tough decision. I know.
I had to realize that when that time comes, if an animal were still in the wild, it would not survive.
And I did not want to see mine suffering. It's a humane thing to do.
As for a new pet? Too soon. That's like trying to find a new love before the old one is healed. Maybe in time.
I know about that too.
