I've recently 'aquired' my neighbor's dog b/c she was living in a very bad enviornment. These people are duggies, the house is trashed (inside and outside) and I don't think she was being taken care of. (never spayed and never had shots! and she's three! or older). After two months of having this beautiful little lady, the previous owner wants her back and I'm not going to do it.

My question is how long does it take for the dog to say "you are my new owner" and forget the old owner. I'm really afraid she'll become happy if she sees the old owner and they'll will take that as a sign that the dog wants to go back.

Uh-oh! My dog ate some philadelphia cheese! I have o idea opf how it got on the floor but I guess it fell out of the fridge... which is kinda odd... cuz we found it in the middle of the hallway... all I know is that no one put it on the floor. Anyway, we saw her eating it after a while so I think she had it for quite a while. When we caught her, she had cheese all over her nose. By the way, she is about a 5 and a half month old west highland white terrier (westie). So she is just a little puppy. I'm not sure if she was just playing but she seemed to be digging her head under her when she was lying down. And she kept doing that for a while. I also noticed her moving her mouth a little bit. Maybe still tasting the cheese. She seemed pretty fine after that I guess. Is she gunna be ok?

We tried not feeding him for 2 days and he still would not eat his dog food, but would eat table scraps. Not only that, but he seems to insist on being "hand fed" when he does eat.

my friends teacup schnauser is now about three yrs old and is bleeding from the rectum for the second time in a year. last time the vet my friend went to said its from a nervous condition in small dogs. at the time he said if the dog had'nt gotten to the hospital when she did it would have been dead in 30 mins. from the bleeding. they said there was nothing wrong with the dog other than a nervous condition. has anyone heard of this before or know of anything else it could be. maybe something related to teacup schnausers.

A dog breeder gave my Gma a chihuahua because she couldn't have any puppies. The chihuahua only had one surviving puppy and the breeder put a lot of money in vet bills. Another pregnancy would have killed Cinnabun. So she got her fixed.
My grandmother said she was going to put her to sleep, I seriously don't see the sense in that. She had hundreds in vet bills and would have another bill for euthanasia. She could have just sold her, right? She'd get money back and not spend anymore. She is a healthy dog, she just can't have babies.
So is my Gma confused, is the breeder stupid, or do all breeder euthanize their female dogs for not being able to reproduce? I know I am confused so don't bring it up again.

My friend is staying with me this month due to a house fire...
I have 3 dogs, 17 yr old Chow Mix M, 4 yr old Newfoundland M and a 3 yr old Pit F...
My friend just came last week with a 3 yr old Corgi F and a 5 month old coon hound...
We are all going nuts over here! The coonhound isn't housebroken so whenever he goes anywhere, all the other dogs seem to follow suit...They are all getting along when we are here but they are being super food aggressive and a bit competitive. I am worried about a fight breaking out if we leave them alone together too long.
It's impossible to separate them because I have a very small open living space and no fenced in area.

I realize this is a crazy situation but my friend is homeless and will be here all month at least...

Is there anything we can do to keep things amicable with so many in such a small space?

READ THE WHOLE THING B4 you Answer Please!!!

My husband has had this dog named Cajun for about 3 months and he loves it (pit bull). He spends so much time with him and I am extremely jealous. Im pregnant and I want him to be around ME and not a dog!!! The dog has all kinds of pet dander in the air and my allergies are congested bkuz of this mut roaming around the house and doing whatever he wants. I am not friendly to the dog nor am I mean, I just ignore him and he ignores me as well. We have an understanding to stay out of each others way. The dog is a boy and he is neutered so I know he cant get violent. I cant use violence towards me as an excuse so that my husband can get rid of the dog. I dont want to do anything cruel to him because the dog is such a nice boy, he is extremely nice and a patient dog. he has a chip implanted that directs him back to our home if he strays so i cant set him free or the military will get my husband in trouble, any ideas? HELP

So some of you may think I'm overreacting, but hear me out, please.

I pulled into the Safeway parking lot (grocery store) and my dogs head was sort of out of the window - her chin was resting on the window - nose sticking out.

This guy walks by, LUNGES at her, and "barks"!! I know, it sounds stupid and like it's not a big deal if someone "barks", but I can't explain it in words.

Anyway, he SCARED her and she peed on herself.

I was SO enraged, I yelled at him, but he didn't hear me.

I'm not someone to complain about ANYTHING, I never ask to speak to managers. Well, I built the courage and called a Manager up front.

I told him what happened and he said it would be taken care of :)

Just wanted to share..made me SO mad I'm upset now.

Has this ever happened to you?

I'm an animal care student and today we were taught about vaccines. For dogs we were told they get given the DHLPPi combo, and then we moved onto cats. However don't they get Kennel cough vaccine? I recently took my dog for a booster and she only had the big one, not the separate kennel cough one up the nose, which I've seen other dogs be given. Is this only given on request or if they're going into kennels?
What about canine coronavirus which I've just read about?

My dog is in need of a new bed (her's is starting to flatten out). She is an 8 year old Golden Retriever, and she has mild hip dysplasia on one side. She loves to snuggle in and curl up when she sleeps, especially on the couch or my bed!! She also loves to sleep upside down on the floor while her legs lean against the side of the couch (it's really funny) but never sleeps like that at night, only naps. She needs something that will support her as she gets a little older, but also something that will be comfortable for her to sleep in. I was thinking about getting her a slumber ball such as this one:

Do you think that is an appropriate choice?

Thanks :D

How old is too late to get a dog neutered?

2007-12-11 08:31:14 · 15 answers · asked by Anonymous

We just found out our poor little guy has fleas! He has an appointment at the groomers on Thursday night to get his nails trimmed, a bath and the mats behind his ears cut out (hes a collie mix so he gets them quite a bit)
I dont want to take him though if theres a risk he might give fleas to another dog.
We got Advantage from the vet this morning, but I was wondering if we apply it now, can he still go to the groomers on Thursday? Im not sure because one, I dont know if thats enough time for it to work and two, if theres is still a chance another dog there can get fleas from him.

With all the talk of BYBs (Back yard breeders), puppy mills, show breeders, professional breeders... where do we draw the line?
Which is better and how do we distinguish one from another?
.......
This was sparked in my mind when I read that "we should leave it to the professional breeders!"
Is a professional breeder someone that makes their living from breeding and/or showing dogs?
What is the training/education that makes them a professional? (I dont think our local college offers a 'dog breeders' degree).
Would the person raising 40-50 litters a year be considered a professional, since they are doing it for a living?
Is the small hobby breeder that owns a few acres and keeps a few purebred dogs, showing his best when he can find time and afford to do it a BYB?
AS far as show dog breeders go (I am speaking of the AKC), who determines what is right or wrong, when deciding where any one breeder falls in the dilemma?

We're thinking of buying a Beagle pup for our family soon, the breeder has a 16 week old yellow one, or an 8 week old Tri-Color (the color we like better), for more $ of course.
I don't know which age is better for training purposes.
Also, they are not AKC, I think she said APR (?), is that stuff important?
