We just found out our poor little guy has fleas! He has an appointment at the groomers on Thursday night to get his nails trimmed, a bath and the mats behind his ears cut out (hes a collie mix so he gets them quite a bit)
I dont want to take him though if theres a risk he might give fleas to another dog.
We got Advantage from the vet this morning, but I was wondering if we apply it now, can he still go to the groomers on Thursday? Im not sure because one, I dont know if thats enough time for it to work and two, if theres is still a chance another dog there can get fleas from him.

let the groomer know he has fleas and they will do a flea bath on him which you can also do at home with any shampoo. Just give him a soapy bath with shampoo and leave the suds on the pup for 3-5 minutes so that it kills the fleas and rinse. then wait until thursday to give advantage as it may wash off at the groomers as it takes a couple of days to fully "cure".

You also need to treat your home if you have not thus far. Cheap trick would be to place a soapy plate under a desk lamp on the floor and watch the fleas hop in and die.

No, he should not need another bath. The Advantage (and any topical flea treatment) works with the oils in the skin. If you bathe him and then put it on him, the Advantage won't really work as it should. You also should not give your dog a medicated flea bath before putting the Advantage on him because this could seriously harm or kill your dog because this will give your dog an overload on chemicals in his blood stream. You don't ever really have to give a dog a bath before applying flea treatment. The treatment starts working within 2 hours and all fleas should be dead within 24 hours.\ EDIT: Giving him a bath a few days afterwards is also not necessary.

give him atleast a week, and if hes getting a bath, it'll come off in the wash so you'll need to reapply it. Tell the groomers whats up and see what they say. Either way, he probably got the fleas from the Groomers, thats how my dog got it, but I switched groomers and treated him, and now hes good as golden.

The Advantage will kill all fleas on him within 24 hours, if you get it all properly on his skin. Generally it's OK to bath if you wait 48 hours after application so thurs should be OK - double check the instructions though, it will say when it's OK to bath.

You must also wait 48 hours AFTER bathing before you can apply any spot-on.

Don't leave it to the groomers to flea treat him because they tend to use useless store-bought products like flea shampoos.

Call the vet's office and get their advice. I do know that it's best to use Advantage when the dog's skin has a chance to get a little oil in it, so you wouldn't want to apply it right after a bath, but not entirely sure if bathing after application will make a difference.

If you are concerned, get some flea shampoo and bathe him right before you go. That will kill the live fleas. It's the eggs you have to worry about, but Advantage will take care of that.

My vet told me that you need to wait 48 hours after applying advantage to give your dog a bath.

You should probably ask your vet what they recommend. They might be able to give your dog a "flea bath" over there.

It is water soluble and will be washed off at the groomer's. You have to wait till after the bath.

Yes that should be enough time for it to be absorbed into the skin and yes, of course, other animals can get fleas from him.
