A dog breeder gave my Gma a chihuahua because she couldn't have any puppies. The chihuahua only had one surviving puppy and the breeder put a lot of money in vet bills. Another pregnancy would have killed Cinnabun. So she got her fixed.
My grandmother said she was going to put her to sleep, I seriously don't see the sense in that. She had hundreds in vet bills and would have another bill for euthanasia. She could have just sold her, right? She'd get money back and not spend anymore. She is a healthy dog, she just can't have babies.
So is my Gma confused, is the breeder stupid, or do all breeder euthanize their female dogs for not being able to reproduce? I know I am confused so don't bring it up again.

Well, there are breeders and then there are breeders.

The ones that think of their dogs only as puppy producing machines, yes, they will kill the ones that don't produce so they don't have to spend money on them.

But good breeders who love their dogs do not do this. Even if they decide that they don't want the dog, they will find a new home for it rather than kill it.

For example - my Sally was bred and then got an infection and had to be spayed, so she never had any puppies. It's now 6 years later, she is still here enjoying "retired" life. She has fun competing in agility, rally and obedience. She is spoiled rotten.

Some breeders might do this, but I have a rehoming policy. When a female is retired from breeding or just doesn't meet my specifications as a potential show or breeding dog for what ever reason (age, health, poor conformation, complications, etc) she is spayed and "adopted" out to a good home- I even have a waiting list, people waiting for one of my "culled" dogs. I see no reason to end a dog's life just because it will not be producing puppies.

Some people just plain suck. Apparently this "breeder" saw no value in a dog who could not reproduce.

My heart dog, love of my life, was spayed at age 4 due to a closed case of pyometria following a breeding. She lived the rest of her life by my side, raising other b*tch's pups and working as my first Service Dog. I'll always miss her.

I'm glad your grandmother took the dog and she'll be loved the rest of her life.

Breeders do some funny things even to rehome a dog after it can no longer have puppies is just as bad.

Yes, that really does happend, to some breeders there is no sense in keeping a dog that isn't a money maker. Sad but true

No person with even a slight sense of morality would euthanase a dog for not being able to reproduce. It's the
'breeder' who should be put to sleep.

my sister adopted a full breed sheltie because her former owners abandoned her because she couldn't have puppies. They had her in the basement and kept trying to breed her, she had a hernia and was very sick. I think this "breeder" is a fake. Glad your grandma has the dog now.

Bad breeders do this. The dog is no longer useful to them so they just want to get rid of it. You should adopt the dog to get it out of this horrible situation. You might also report them to animal control.
