On his lower back he has areas where his hair is almost completely gone, and their are rashes and scabs. Could it be mange? We don`t have enough money for the Vet right now, so what could I give him so that his skin and fir will go back to normal?

I got my dog from a breeder, and ive had her for about 3 weeks already, the lady said that she already sent in for the AKC papers (sorry i dont exactly know whats involved in getting those papers) and would mail them to us when she received them, but she still claims to not have them...is she pulling my leg? or does it really take that long?

I have a 3mon old pup and I'm working to potty train him. But I run into 2 problems. When I am home I work on the crate training, by letting him lay in the crate after our walks. I get home, take him outside, feed him, play with and walk him, and then put him in the crate no longer than 4 hours. BUT...

1. I can't get him to get into his crate without tricking him.

(perhaps because I've let him run free and sleep in the bed with me for the last two weeks) I usually get him to follow a treat, but he's catching on. And I can't leave the door open or he'll crawl out.

2. Also, when I'm at work, I let him stay in the kitchen with puppy pads on one side of the room and a larger crate (which he loves)on the other. But sometimes when I get home I find urine on the outside of the pads as well as on the pads. I've extended up to 5 pads and he's still missing, and only a little jack russell.

Can anyone help me?

My golden retriever LOVES to have something in his mouth, usually his stuffed duck. When he wants attention, however, he tries to hold someone's hand or arm in his mouth. If you give him your undevided attention he'll stop. He doesn't bite down, but it bruises my grandmother and it is not always welcome behavior with guests. Any idea what causes this, or suggestions for curbing his behavior?

I'm not in college yet, but I know that when I do go to college, I would like a dog...I would prefer a smaller one, but regardless I would like suggestions. Let's just assume that I'm going to be renting a house with some friends so the dog could go out. Any breed that can handle being alone while I'm at school, isn't prone to health problems, is friendly and gentle, and won't destroy the house. Any suggestions??

While putting on a warm coat to keep your pup warm, is acceptable, have you ever just bought a t-shirt for your pup? I'm seeing so much available for dogs, it is hard not to resist! Do you do holiday pictures with "antlers"? What do you think is acceptable?

So, my girls have always been very good about eating, then going outside, then in the crate for the night. Until about a week ago. Now they're like infants - they cry to be let out every 2 hours, and if I ignore the Chi she actually does have accidents in her crate.

I've not changed their food, I've not added or taken anything away.

Last night I figured if I let them sleep with me in bed (big no no) they wouldn't get up as frequently. I was 1/2 right. The JRT/Westie mix still got up every 2 hours to go, but the Chi slept thru the night.

It's not a bladder infection because they're not going outside to potty so much as relieve themselves of solids (either outside or in their crate).

So... what time of the night can I call it quits leaving their food out for them? Ordinarily I'd leave it out for 15 minutes and pick it up, but the Chi has a protective eating habit where she grabs a piece and runs away and that takes forever.

Any ideas?

I have a 15 yr.old niece and she is asking me to help her find a chihuahua pup, I have 2 chi's myself!! My dilema is in the past her record w/having pets is not so great, so I am concearned for the puppy she may get, She wants a chi because all her friends have one so once the fad is over what happens to the dog? I feel bad because she is coming to me for help, but on the other hand I almost don't want to be responsible for putting a pup in her enviroment. Any suggestions are welcome. I know first hand owning a chi is like having a child, there small and pretty helpless, I am torn on what to do....thanks

My relatives live in a neighborhood where houses are so close together they share the same tiny yard. The house across from theirs has a pit bull and the owners sometimes let it out without a leash. So far there has been no problem, as apparently they only let it out at night when no one else is out. But is still worries me as the neighborhood is filled with kids, including my relatives. Even though there has not yet been an incident, do I still have the right to call any kind of authorities or animal control and ask them to tell the dog's owners to make sure it is on a leash when outside? Especially since it is a state-owned housing project.
