I vol. at my local animal shelter every Sat. Recently, I adopted a supposed saint Bernard mixed breed. Needless to say, I have a full blooded St. Bernard, loving, happy, and saved the day before he was due to be put down. I will tell you this much though in respite of what I just said, full blooded "pure breds" Have about 60-70 percent more health problems (which means bigger vet bills and shorter life expectancy) then your average mutt. Please save one of these little guys. These unwanted dogs are put down by the thousands each day, whereas the puppy store will keep them til a rich breeder forks over the money to have a "show dog" Those dogs at the stores who don't get homes (the very few) go to rescue groups for specific breeds, which also if you are looking for a specific breed and dont find one at the shelter...I would google for animal rescue groups in your area or even ask the shelter while you are there to see if they have a list or any numbers. I would suggest you go to the pound first, I mean who knows, your best friend may already be there waiting for you, I know my 2 were. Check out http://www.petfinder.com/ you might find your shelter here. Good luck in your search.

You know, I have read most of the post. And here is what it boils down to. If you want a pure bred breed, backed by a health guarantee, go to the breeder directly. If you are not particular about the breed, or the age of you new pet, then go to you local shelter. But you need to understand that you may have some issues to work with in the dog/puppy. You have little information on his/her background. And adopting a pet is NOT FREE! So keep that in mind. Understand that 9 times out of 10 a dog in the shelter is a direct result of the person not having their pets spay or neutered, and are NOT the breeders falt. They purchase a puppy under impulse and do not take care of it properly, it gets bred and the next thing you know there are pets in the shelter. It is not the result of breeders, most puppies are sold on a Neuter agreement.

DO NOT buy your puppy from a pet store. They are just a back yard breeders rejects who dont care about what kind of homes the puppies go to. They have health problems and in the pet store they are hard to house train because they get use to going to the bathroom in their "den"
I would find a good breeder and get a quality dog. If you cannot afford 1000 for a dog then look in the shelter because if a breed charges less then normaly they are a BYB. Good breeders charge more because their puppies are bred for quality and the price of showing, vaccinations, stud fee, health tests etc. are why they charge so much for the pups and these things NEED to be done and BYB's never do because they do not care about the well being of the pups they care about MONEY!

If you are particular about the type of dog - go to a breeded.
You can go to a pet shop or buy from an ad in the newspaper, but you need to do your homework like where did the dog come from - is their papers on the dog.
if you want to adopt - go to the humane society
if you like a certain breed of dog - check and see if there is a dog rescue in your area for that breed.

Why BUY when you can A-D-O-P-T, go to online to your local humane society or SPCA and see what dogs they have up for adoption, + these animals will have already been spayed and neutered have a complete check up and given all of the shots to make sure that they are current on vasinations. They will also know what is the best environment for the dog, and it is cheaper than flat out buying one. Good luck

If you're okay with not having a purebred dog, then your local animal shelter is a great place to get a dog. They sometimes come housetrained and know a few commands, and you'll find lots of different personalities there. Active dogs, mellow dogs, dogs that are good with kids... the staff should be able to help you find a dog that suits your needs.
If you want a purebred dog, try a breed rescue. There are lots of different breed rescues across the country, and most of them are adult purebreds whose owners could no longer take care of them.

If you wan't a pure bred dog you should go to www.puppy.com it is a site where people post thier dogs that they want to sell. Sometimes they are homeless and mixed, sometimes they are pure bred. They have lots of selection so whichever breed you want you will probably find. Like everyone else was saying alot of dogs come from puppy mills and they don't care about the dogs, just the money, so be carfull and look in to where you are getting your dog.

I would recommened you ADOPT a dog from a local shelter. You can try www.petfinder.org to find a pet at a shelter or contact your local Society for Prevention of Cruelety to Animals (S.P.C.A.).
Help save a life. Shelters but pets to sleep everyday, pet stores will leave a pet until someone buys it.
