I don't know whether or not it is painful, but my cocker had cherry eye. The vet took care of it with a quick surgery (my boy was gone for an afternoon, mainly because of the anesthetic) and he seemed much happier afterward. His was rather pronounced, so if nothing else, I'm sure that his vision improved considerably (it was huge when I rescued him). He was about a year old when he had the surgery. Here's a link below that has some information about it for you. Unfortunately, I didn't really find anything concerning a recommended age. I would suggest calling your local vets to see if they have a preferred age to perform the surgery. Good luck, and I hope this helps.

I have a 1 year old female chihuahua, that has cherry eye, that comes and goes. When I took her to the vet, to see if I could get it fixed, he said, as long as it's not bothering her and she's not scratching at it, to just leave it alone. He said it's not painful, and they don't realize that it's even there, that fixing it, does not guarantee, it won't come back, and that trying to fix it can possibly make her go blind. If worse comes to worse, and your dog starts scratching at it, then yes, consider having it surgically repaired.Just keep an eye on it.

Its not that painful, but needs to be cut out. Its probably more uncomfortable than anything. Its kinda like having a large stye.

If not cut out then it will keep growing until covering and blinding the animal.

We have a pekinese at the shelter with cherry eye, she is a mother of 6 puppies. She is not in any pain, but she will be having hers cut out.

That is so not true about neglect.

My Cocker Spaniel had cherry eye, I was told by the vet it is common in the breed. My dog had many bad reactions to anesthesia and drugs that were given for his neutering, dental cleanings, and etc. and he had lots of allergies so the vet advised against putting him under the added stress of having his cherry eye taken care of.

The best thing to do would be to consult your vet about it.

my dog had it and according to my vet it wasn't painfull (my dog lived to be 16 & got it when he was a puppy & never showed any signs of stress. ) My vet told us it didn't hurt him, he couldn't see it, & that removing it leaves a chance that he would go blind. Per our vets recommendation, we opted to keep it since it 'didn't bother him' and after a short while we were all so used to it that we didn't even notice anymore.

It can be done at the same time as spay or neuter, no need to rush it before then. It usually doesn't seem to bother the dog.

I don't know if it is painful or not but not getting it corrected is considered NEGLECT so yes you DO need to get it taken care of immediately.
