I read lots of statements on here regarding only breeding to better the breed. I understand wanting to improve the breed, but only breeding in order to do that? Just how many breeders are out there that do it only to better the breed and can they keep up with the demand for puppies each year by the public?

Also, I know myself could care less about the sire or dam winning BIS at Westminster or Krufts or even the local dog show. So is showing the dog really that important of a thing to obtain only a pet? I would think the answer to that question would be no to the general public.

Making sure the pup is healthy is one thing, so certs are a good thing there, but I do not think that dogs need to prove themselves in the ring in order to be bred, only that they are healthy and reasonably free of genetic issues.

Am I alone in this?

I have a five-year-old small terrier mix - we think a cairn terrier crossed with a pomeranian. She growls when playing and instead of whining when she wants something. I've worked with lots of dogs but have never encountered this non-aggressive growling before. Is it common in terriers?

I was just wondering who else gets as big a kick as I do out of giving your dog(s) Christmas presents and watching them go nuts. Mine opens his own, then when he gets the new toy, he runs around like a lunatic for like 20 minutes non stop, then he sits there and pants like he just ran a marathon. We laugh our butts off at this every year. It's great.

My dog got into a box of choclates. She has been vomiting a few times since last night. Did this happen to your dog and how did you handle it.? I'm afraid to go to the vet and only find out that it has to take its course.

My dog is almost 5 years old and I never got her spayed. She has never had a litter of puppies and I have always kept her far from male dogs, especially when she is in heat. The last few weeks she has been acting kind of weird- usually she does right before she goes into heat- and she was in heat last week and I think it is done now. However, for the last almost week, she hasn't been eating a whole lot, she took a little bit of food from my hand if I hand fed her and the last 2 days I have noticed that she is urinating in places she has NEVER urinated. It is like she has become incontinent. She has also been giving me this weird wide eyed look. Has anyone else had this happen to their dog. I was able to set up an appointment for her for this afternoon because my concern has gotten that extreme. Any idea of what can be causing this? I don't want to get hit with a vet bill that is going to cost me an arm and a leg!

Weighing the risks and benefits of the lepto vaccination, how many of you get the lepto vacc for your dogs and how many of you choose not to?

It's something I've almost always given my dogs with no adverse reactions, but lately I've been hearing other things about lepto. I understand tha risks on both sides, but I'm curious how you all feel about it.

I love animals but it seems that pit bull dogs are a problem. They are known to attack randomly and have been involved in a couple of incidents in the last couple days. A baby's toes were gnawled off by one and a pony was attacked this morning by one. They seem to be naturally aggresive dogs and seem to be a favorite of thugish people in my neighborhood. I see alot of thugs in my neighborhood who have them and I would guess it is because they are violent in nature and this would be attractive to the gang members in my area that have them. There are probably some good ones (pit bulls, not gang members) but the bad seem to outnumber the good so why can't we just euthanize them out of existence?

I have 2 male mini dachshunds, 15 weeks old. As soon as they started walking, I have been trying to potty train them. I take them outside every hour on the hour or more if they start sniffing around. When I catch them "in the act" I tell them NO and immediately put them outside. When I take them out and they do their business, I praise them like crazy "GOOD BOY!!" and love on them.
They're old enough now that I thought they'd be housebroken.
I'm sick of cleaning up after them...thank goodness I have hardwood floors at least!

What am I doing wrong?? Their mama is housebroken, and I've never had a problem with her going in the house. Are these boys just being stubborn or what??

Thanks for any help!

We have a dog (shih-tzu male) he is super adorable but he pees and poops around the house all the time. My mom decided to put him in the basement and thats where he spends most of the day and sleeps at night. He comes upstairs sometimes but not really. Is that bad? Can he get lonely or depressed? I personally hate it but my mom said she's the owner so she decides what to do with him.

My neighbour is fostering a mother dog and her puppies, the pups are 16 days old and their eyes aren't open yet. I've heard that if rabbits' eyes don't open in time they can be blind, will the same happen with dogs? I've heard dogs eyes open anywhere from 7-14 days after birth, but I can't find anything about what happens if they *don't* open in that time frame ... Does anybody know?

I have a german shepherd puppy ( female, 11 weeks). Previously some other GSD owners suggested me use MAXI of Royal Canin. I already switched to this brand. But last week, after seeing vet for vaccine, vet suggested another brand Hill's from Hill's Pet Nutrition, inc. I was confussed, should I switch to Hill's or stay with MAXI?

He drinks about 6pints a day, and asks for more water when he drinks all in his dish. It is worst in the evening, and he has at least one accident each evening, even letting him out 4 or 5 times during the evening. All tests from the Vets are coming back negative, no one seems to know what is happening.

I unknowingly bought a maltese from a puppy mill about 10 years ago. I paid $500. I went to a home in the country. The woman was nice and had a lovely room with puppy pictures all over and called it an area to meet the puppy. I asked to see where the rest of the dogs were kept. I noticed a large building not far from their home. I was told that it makes the dogs get too excited and they start barking and the neighbors complain (yet she didn't have many close neighbors). That should've tipped me off. She also didn't let me see the parents. Another warning sign. She made me sign a 24 hr. guarantee. Another warning sign. The puppy was also only 1 1/2 lbs. but was 8 weeks and weaned. I wanted a really small Maltese. We took the pup home and a day later, it became very weak and wouldn't eat. It stopped breathing and my Mom gave it CPR. We rushed it to the vet. They put it in an incubator and did extensive tests. They determined it had a bad heart probably due (cont'd)

My boyfriend just brought home a baby Scottish Terrier last night from a friend at his work. She had them sitting in her car all day w/o their mom (horrible i know). Makes me feel better bringing the little guy to a better home. She was giving them away because she has like 10 other dogs. She says the pup is around 5-6 weeks old, but i do not believe that. He has no teeth. From what I know, they get teeth when they are 30 days.. or atleast start getting some. Here is a picture of how small he is, he is the runt of the group though: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r128/dressxupxinxyou/P1010886.jpg

I bought him a bottle and everything to feed him. Does anyone have any clue about Scottish Terriers and when they should be taken from there momma? Any tips? Thank you.

Last week I posted this same question, and all I got were people telling me to get rind of it and build a real fence or tie her up. Well I solved the problem without those "solutions". Since it's winter her, I must shovel the snow off of my driveway. When doing this I would pile the snow over the wire for the fence. Since the signal only goes a foot or so over the wire, my dog, the smart girl she is, figured out that the snowbank gave her more hieght, and she could cross the wire without a zap. So I don't have to build a real fence, or tie my dog up in something she'll chew out of.

We have these ongoing "discussions" about the pros/cons of owning a Pit Bull. Tonight she has parents of a child that their P.B. ate the baby's toes off ! It might be an important program to view. Are you going to watch it??
