My boyfriend just brought home a baby Scottish Terrier last night from a friend at his work. She had them sitting in her car all day w/o their mom (horrible i know). Makes me feel better bringing the little guy to a better home. She was giving them away because she has like 10 other dogs. She says the pup is around 5-6 weeks old, but i do not believe that. He has no teeth. From what I know, they get teeth when they are 30 days.. or atleast start getting some. Here is a picture of how small he is, he is the runt of the group though: http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r128/dressxupxinxyou/P1010886.jpg

I bought him a bottle and everything to feed him. Does anyone have any clue about Scottish Terriers and when they should be taken from there momma? Any tips? Thank you.

Whoever Tyke is.. the person who responded down there.. he is PURE Scottish Terrier. Maybe you should do a little research on what they look like so young before you reply..

To call a helpless animal a creature or mongrel is just absolutely ridiculous. And yes, he is away from his mother, but he had no choice. And I think that taking him in, and giving him the love and nutrition that he needs a very good thing. Bottle feeding him the correct formula is a bad thing when away from his mother? I think not.

Tyke, is there something wrong with you? Can you not type like a normal person? And do you always act this way with people you don't even know. If you have been doing this for 40 years, act your damn age. Idiot.

Weaning at six to eight weeks is ideal with a few weeks added to adjust to "independent living".
Since the puppy has no teeth but is walking (from the picture) I'd suggest getting some royal canin puppy food and mix in some "just born" puppy formula or "Esbillac" to make a mush. I got a puppy from someone discarding it at about three weeks old and raised her this way. She was wobbly but walking, also no teeth but they were about to break thru. Then her puppy teeth were needle like and weird looking but when the adult ones came in they were fine.
With the puppy I raised, I would make that mush and she would first lick it off my finger then started to lap it from a small bowl that was easy for her to eat from. Keep plenty of fresh water available too.
Congrats on your new pup. I know that sometimes a breed can have colors that are not regular for the breed. You got this one free like I got my little pup and you saved it! Good for you!
You will be very bonded to this little tyke. The one I raised at about the same age is a Pit Bull or pitty mix. The mother was a purebred stray but the father was unknown.
I don't care what a dog is mixed with or if it is purebred. I was looking online and saw a photo of a scottie with some black and tan coloring. Maybe they are not "supposed" to be that color. Maybe there is something else in the pup. Who cares? You saved a life and when he gets a bit older you will be able to tell more about him. He's a real cutie.

Sorry but he's not a Scottish terrier. Scotties don't have to be black, they can be wheaten or brindle, but they are never black & tan.
His Mom may have been a scotty but his Dad won't have been.
It may help to find out what dogs she has on the premises & there is a chance that the pups in the litter could have had different sires. Does she have a male Yorkie?
A Scotty pup at about 5-6 weeks would like like this;-

Some pups don't get teeth until five/six weeks but you can get baby puppy food which is a dry food that you moisten to feed. You can also get puppy milk replacer.
He will need five meals a day for the next couple of weeks and doesn't need a bottle. You may find he eats better off a spoon or from a slightly raised bowl rather than a shallow dish. Expect to throw a lot of food away for the first few days.
A responsible breeder would keep puppies until over eight weeks but they start weaning from about four weeks and the pups should be happily devouring food - four meals a day - before lleaving for their new homes.

Edited to fix the link ;o(

I'm afraid that I have to concur with others who have already answered your question. That is no scottish terrier puppy. I'm a yorkie breeder and I would say that it looks way more like a yorkie than a scotty. could also be a silky terrier/australian terrier - hard to see without seeing the pup properly. He could also be a mixed breed. By the way, there's nothing wrong with a mixed breed dog, I have purebreds and mix breed dogs and they all bring me so much joy. He is amazingly adorable but that is too early to be completely weaned. You will need to buy something like divetelact - available from vets and some pet stores. It's a powder form and you mix it with the appropriate amounts of water - slightly warm like for babies. You can also start seeing if he's interested in a super high quality puppy kibble. I always wean mine by soaking puppy kibble in warm divetelact - some ppl do it with water though. make sure it's nice and soft. Sometimes they will pick up the food and mouth it and drop it, even when they don't have teeth yet. He will be fine, he won't die from being weaned a little early. Divetelact is very good. Actually it's what many breeders use in australia. I don't know what's used in the U.S. - I'm assuming you're in the u.s.. Good luck with him!

They should not be taken from the mother until they are 8 wks. I have never seen a Scotty that looked like yours, you got a mixed breed (akc.org). As for taking care of the pup do some research on dog care and not on YA half the people here do not know what they are talking about.

Don't worry about Tyke's comments so much. I recognize the writing style of GetemGang, an ID that is no longer actice. I've rarely seen a decent comment come out of her. I'm sure that is who Tyke is, and you can never expect anything more (or less) from this person than sarcasm and insults. The best thing to do is to ignore them.

Sorry I can't answer your question though.

No puppy should be taken from it's mother before 8 weeks of age, and between 10-12 weeks is ideal. In many states it is ILLEGAL to sell a puppy before 8 weeks of age.

Your friend may be due a visit from the SPCA.

He is soooo cute, I kissed my computer screen. He appears to be about 5-6 weeks old. Puppies are usually taken from the mom at about 8-10 weeks.Call a vet and ask what to do with feeding, etc.And give him a kiss for me!

5 or 6 weeks ?!?!??! Shame on that woman, that's far too young to separate a pup from it's mom and siblings. You can do some research online about how best to help him but I strongly suggest that you get to a vet and explain what has happened. Good luck!

Hi please go to petsmart and get some puppy formula if you want a strong and healthy puppy. They have it in stock cause it is for breeders and people who have lost mother dogs due to death while birthing . they have the miniature baby bottle too. but remember you have to keep them warm and feed them fairly often and you have to watch him carefully . sorry that guy made you mad by being so ignorant . some ppl on here are that way but not everyone . good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

Please take him to the Vet. You have to buy dog formula for him. You cannot give him cows milk or any other sort of milk.

He's sooooo sweet, I want him and all the rest.

God bless little Momma; you have a baby for the Holidays.

He needs a lot of care because he is probably too young to leave his biological momma.
