My dog got into a box of choclates. She has been vomiting a few times since last night. Did this happen to your dog and how did you handle it.? I'm afraid to go to the vet and only find out that it has to take its course.

Thank you for all your answers. I can't choose a best answer yet.
I just wanted you to know that I took her to the vet. By the way, she ate 7ounces of choclates minus 1. I read the ingredients to the Vet and shetold met that was good because their was no bakers choclate in it.
Thank you again.

You should call the vet ASAP, before anything gets worse!
I don't envy you one bit.
I hope this is helpful:
White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers' chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

The night before a got my boxer/lab mixes neutered they ate a whole big box or Christmas chocolates. Luckily we were on our way to the vet but they threw up all the way to the vet. The vet said that every thing should be fine and that it was more serious if it was baking chocolate. I would call your vet. and ask because it might depend on on your dog weight and breed. By the way in was dark chocolate but they were fine.

It is not the chocolate that is potentially poisonous, it is the theobromine in it. Theobromine can induce eplileptic seizures or cardiac arythmia. Chocolate may or may not be detrimental or fatal to your dog; there are a lot of mitigating factors involved. The size of the dog, the health and age of the dog, the amount ingested, whether it is dark or milk chocolate. Milk chocolate has 44-66 mg/oz theobromine, dark chocolate 450 mg/oz and baking/bitter chocolate or cocoa powder varies as much as 150-600 mg/oz. There have not been any reported deaths of dogs who have ingested under 200 mg theobromine per kg body weight. Theobromine stays in the system for 14 to 20 hours. You should induce vomiting immediately, but if your dog is already vomiting, that is a good sign. Take the dog to the vet if it is comatose, or displaying epileptic-type symptoms. Administering charcoal will absorb the theobromine. Get the dog to eat some thoroughly burnt toast, that is, it is so black it disintegrates in your hands. Chocolate is not the only detrimental food to dogs. Foods like onions, walnuts, raw potatoes, and even turkey skin can have adverse effects on dogs.

How much does your dod weigh? How much was truley ingested? Dark chocolate is the more serious chocolate to woory about. I think your dog will be fine. Not all chocolate will hurt a dog. Just give them a real bad case of diarrhea. At worse pancreatitis. Call your vet before you do anything. Good luck!!!

CALL your vet and let them know what happened. Your dog is obviously reacting to the chocolate, and it's good that she's vomiting (you're supposed to induce vomiting when they eat it). But you need to call your vet. Make sure she doesn't get dehydrated from any loss of fluids, and GOOD LUCK!

TAKE YOUR DOG TO THE VET NOW! If you take your dog to the vet as soon as you know its been into chocolates they can pump your dogs stomach to rid it of some of the chocolate. If you wait just because you are scared, your dog may die. Get to the vet now and get your dog some help. If you don't, you WILL have to let things run its course because your dog will die if it has injested too much.

If it was dark chocolate, get to your vet!! I was an er vet tech and more than a few ounces of dark chocolate is a serious toxin to dogs. If it was milk chocolate, give her 6 hours with no food/water and see what the vomitting does.

If your dog is a small dog - you need to get him/her to the vet. If your dog is larger, you can try to remove food - and only give water for 24 hours.
You can then try to feed some softer foods (oatmeal, toast, etc)
Please keep chocolate away from animals in the future.

hydrogen peroxide is a safe way to induce vomiting in dogs. i would give her a tablespoon of this, and take her to the vet immediatly. you need to get the chocolate out of her system, or it will kill her.
