Female Beagle, 2 yrs. 4th heat. Second heat we've allowed mating. The first heat that we allowed (her third heat) mating, resulted in "false" pregnancy.

Male Beagle, 4 yrs. Never sired before. Has short legs, hence, mounting issues.

I bought my Chocolate Lab at the age of 10 months in May 2006. He's now 1yr and 2 months old. I never had any problems with him until recently. Whenever he does something bad, I give him the traditional tap on the head. Nothing mean or violent just a good tap, with a firm 'NO', to let him know that its wrong. It's always been ok until for about a week or two he's started growling at me when I tap him and even tried to take a nip at me. Again nothing too agressive, just to tell me basically to back off. People tell me that it's because he sees himself as the master of the household but I don't understand how that can be seeing how I haven't changed any habits with him since I got him and never had this problem before. He's not yet fixed and I'm wondering if he may just be becoming territorial. Has this happened to anyone else and their dog? What can I do about this? Will getting him operated on fix the problem? I love him to pieces and don't want to get rid of him.

I'm a single grad-student with a medium size apartment. I have time to groom once a week and exercise requirements are not a problem since I'm a runner. The most important factor being that I have a lot of friends coming through my apartment so it would have to be a dog that got along well with strange people without jumping all over them.
Note: I'm not really into toy breeds.

I just got a new puppy and people are telling me it's important to brush their teeth. Is this necessary? Don't they stay clean naturally unless given human food?

Our puppy femal schnauzer is going through her first heat cycle. She bled for about a week and a half, but recently we have noticed that her breasts are swollen and her nipples are really hard. Also her vulva is swollen. She seems really needy and wants love constantly. Could she be pregnant? We have a fenced yard and havent seem any dogs in our yard, but her symptoms are really dragging on. It has almost been a week and none of her symptoms have lessened. Help!

I have a pitbull who is so excited when me or my husband comes home, jumping up & down & sometimes nipping at our hands. What would be the best thing to do to teach her not to do that besides swatting at her to get down & yelling at her when I know she clearly does not understand.
