I had a Chat about Dogs and Cat food with the Vet last week, A little here and there wont kill them but its really not good for them...As far as your dog eating HIS dog food..Get a decent quality dry food...Put it down for 15 minutes in the morning if he doesnt eat it pick it up...Dont give him any treats or table food..At night put the dry back down again for 15 minutes..He may wait you out BUT if you are firm and dont give in He will eventually start eating his food.Thats what he needs..Dog food is made for Dogs..Human food for Humans,,,Good Luck Its Hard but worth it!

It could be a few different things. Have you thought that maybe you feed him too many scraps? I know this is hard to face, cuz I can be guilty of the same things.I love feeding my dog, cuz they enjoy it so much, but lets remember there is a line that can be crossed.
Also I think that cat food has a higher amount of protein, so maybe he just craves it, maybe he needs more protein. Check the food that your feeding him to be sure it is rich in vitamins and minerals.
Next, as long as the food that you feed your dog doesn't seem to upset his stomach (does he have a lot of runny stools, or are they usually solid) then if you be sure not to feed him other stuff, then he'll eat when he's hungry. You may consider changing the food tho, b/c he may not like it. If you decide to do so, be sure to mix his current food with the new for a while so you don't upset his stomach. (start wit 1 part new food and 4 parts old kind for about 2 days, then 2pt new/ 3pt old and so on, that way he gets a chance to adjust).

I have a small yorkie/maltese that has the same issue. She does eat people food in very small amounts (she tastes everything we eat) during the day, but I did find a brand of canned dog food that she will eat for me first thing in the morning. It's mighty dog chunks of beef and the chunks of chicken. It actually looks like real meat, and she really likes it. I only feed her that once in the morning, and then I put out a bit of dry eukanuba lamb and rice for her to nibble on. She hardly ever touches it, because I guess she fills up on our food during the day. Try the mighty dog small cans and give her a taste, she might like it, my dog did and she can't stand dog food.

a dog should eat dog food. to keep him out of cat food just put it up high enough that he can't reach it. Everyone in your house will need to be on the same page as far as NOT feeding him people food. Do not allow begging. We train our dogs to "OUT" which means that while we are eating at the table they are not allowed in the room. You just have to decide who will be the pack leader in your house...you or the dog

My chihuahua was like this. We finally got her to eat Science Diet chicken dog food formula in the can. If he want people food boil some boneless, skinless chicken breast (chopped up) and some plain white rice mixed with and feed him that. Certain people food can be very dangerous for a dog. Please read this website for foods that are toxic to a dog.

Try mixing a little cat food with his food if he's on dry dog food.
Or make him some gravy and mix with it.Chicken broth works with my picky eater sometimes. But he likes it best when I mix mac-n-cheese in with his food.Just don't give too much.

Add some savory sauce in his food and he will gulp down his food.
I sometimes add few drops or half n half to my puppy's food and he absolutely loves eating his food until the last bite.
