I'm just curious. I've never heard him howl before.

Just ask the fire department to sound the siren on one of their trucks. It sure sets the dogs off around here.

My older sister used to have a dog who howled to the beginning music to the Andy Griffith show. You know, that whistled theme. I'd turn it on just to hear her howl along with it. I thought it was funny. I was young and easily amused.
The dog I have now has never howled. Not when emergency vehicles with sirens are going by, not when they do the monthly emergency response sirens (200 feet away from my house), and not even when I played a CD of wolves howling along to some really neat music.
Some dogs just don't howl. Others do easily.

Call 911 and tell them that you are being held hostage, and you have a huge box of doughnuts. Your dogs will be howling shortly.
Actually I trained my dog to howl on command. I lived near a fire house and my dog would howl every time she heard the siren. When she howled I would say “sing” and praise her. In a short time all I had to do was say sing Stella.

One of my dogs used to howl at me if i howled at her ... was funny.
Another would howl when the goats bleated.
Another when the fire sirens went off or the fire truck went past.
If you do get him to howl, try and make it on command. Taht way you are controlling the howling

Try singing.
Try clasical music
try some guitar waling music
I taught my dog to " sing " this way.
