Cats - November 2006

[Selected]: All categories Pets Cats

My inlaws have 15 cats. 14 of which are wild from outside. They do not come close to humans they run in the other direction. They feel that declawing is wrong, so all the furniture/carpeting/walls/etc are damaged. Also, they both have Asthma, as does there daughter. While they do clean as best they can, there is obviosly a smell in the house and the air quality is terrible. (Windows cannot be opened because they are afraid the cats will run outside). One cat has cat AIDS and 1 eye, another has had 10K worth of surgery to repair some sort of kidney stone.
They want their daughter (my girlfriend soon to be wife) to take allergy shots that may not work to get her "used to the cats"
Am I wrong for opposing shots? Would anyone feel comfortable leaving their future babies in the house?

Thanks

we picked up our new cat from the rspca 4 nights ago.

he is 7 months old and has, to my knowledge, never had a home of his home. he was in a house with 30 other cats (rspca home!) and seems to have had no socialisation whatsoever despite being with the rspca rep or some length of time.

whilst i appreciate i have to be patient i am worried about him. he has been under the kitchen table since we brought him home, although i know he has had a wander about while we're out! and whilst he will grudgingly let me tickle behind his ears he looks so nervous and claws constantly at his bedding when we go near him.

he also has only seemed to have used his litter tray on the first night and not since then. he doesn't seem to be drinking much either.

any hints, tips??????

How Do I keep my kitten form scratching the furniture? We got leather couches on Monday and we are afraid to put them out becuase they were expensive and we dont want to have our new couches to have scratches. We also still want to keep her and dont want to give her away just becuase of the couches. But, we also want to keep the couches and have no scratches on them, cause i know that leather scratches easily. There must be a way form keeping her form scratching the sofa.

Cats are not a native animal and as such have a devistating detrimental affect on Wildlife, upwards of 17 billion (yes billion) birds are killed by cats each year in the UK alone.

Please do not reply it is only natural for them to kill birds, it may be in their native surrounds but that is not the UK.

Cats also dig up neighbouring gardens and crap all over the place.

As in other parts of the civilised world is it not time to restict cats to being let out of their owners homes only when on a collar and lead?

I have 3 cats who are fond of scratching. One of them is also a chronic vomitter. By the way - they're all female and spayed; 2 are mother and daughter. I'm in the market for new furniture and don't want it to get destroyed by my feline housemates. I intend to buy more scratching posts, but am especially interested in an indoor invisible fence. The products I've seen are advertised for dogs - but are they safe for cats as well? Don't even tell me about the sprays because those don't work unless I use it on the cats directly (not the recommended use). I've also gotten into the habit of cutting their claws weekly, so I'm testing that strategy. Declawing is an absolute last resort.

My cat recently had a seizure. I immediately took the cat to the vet, and my cat had bloodwork done. The cost was $265.00. The vet called me a few days later to report that the cat was border line lyme disease and needed further blood tests done for comfirmation. Today I took the cat in and was charged another $255.00. Is this a normal rate?

rambunctious. Lately she has been crying ALOT. She cries when you leave her in a room and close the door, and cries when she is waiting for her food, etc. Any suggestions on why? (mainly why when you close doors)

I have a kitten that is about 7 weeks old. She is very healthy and active, but she whines when she eats and when she uses her litter box. She also likes to rub her face on the furniture all of the time. I have had kittens in the past and none of them have ever done any of these things. Any ideas? Thanks

I am at work and it is cold and rainy outside and I just wish that I was at home with my cats, especially my 4 month old "Maggie." I am just wondering what they are getting into, and if they are comfortable at home, if they are hungry yet, etc., etc. Am I normal? I must need a life, or a man. . . .lol

He peed in his carrier on the way home from the vet's office. His back legs got pretty soaked in his own pee, as did his front paws. Is there any home remedies out there short of just waiting for him to clean himself off?

Paper toweling him dry was no use in regards to the smell. He is confined to the bathroom right now until I can think of what to do!

I have had a "homeless" female cat on my porch for about 6 months now. When she was dropped off, she was real skinny, and very malnurished. i started feeding her, I know, now she won't go away. But I don't mind that at all. Now she is at a healthy weight, and I really want to take her in. I have to talk to my boyfriend, because he says she is fine on the porch. but i want her to be an indoor cat, like the other 2 cats i have. My question is, what should be done during her first vet check, and roughly how much will it cost? I know I need her to be de-wormed, and flea dipped, and frontline, probably shots as well. I am not sure if she has been spayed or not, I think she has been, because she hasn't had kittens yet and it's been 6 months. i would just like an estimation for what it would cost, so i can discuss it with my boyfriend, before winter really hits. I don't want her out there in the freezing cold. Thanks for your help.

Ok my cat, Tiberius, had an absess behind his ear. He has had this problem before, and we took him to the vet and they said to let him take care of it on his own. He scratched it open that same night, and he took care of cleaning it with a little help from us, and was on antibiotics for a week. This time he had a golf ball sized swelling behind and under his ear. He has scratched it open, and I did the best i could with a medicine and dropper and a solution of betadine and water to cleanse the area and remove the pus. The problem is, he is still scratching at it, and he is too small for a collar. Should I bandage it in some way? Would that help or hurt the situation? I have him sleeping now, and am keeping him quarantined away from my other cats. Should I apply an ointment? I called my vet, and they were no help whatsoever. I just started new job, and they wont take payment plans. I love my cat very much, and would hate to lose him. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Blessed be.

i brought home a 7wk kitten two days ago from the local humane society. she will only eat can food which leads to question one below and also, i am using tidy cats small spaces kitty litter. that would lead to question two.

1.) is it safe for the kitten to eat only can food? and when and how do i introduce dry food to her

2.) is this type of cat litter flushable? when i scoop out her bathroom mess, is it safe to put the clumps down the toilet?

The other day I found the plug for my Christmas lights not connected to the string of lights, he chews shoes, the plug for my computer... and then he goes behind the TV and chews the cords. I try and stop him but sometimes I am not home. One of these days he is going to get electrocuted. I dont want anything to happen to him. Anyone have any tips???

my brother said that his vet told him to keep switching his cats food to find one that doesn't make it sick. it has irritable bowel syndrome and possibly food allergens. he said the ingredient that he thinks his cat is allergic to is the dried egg product. is there any cat foods out there w/o egg product? does anyone else have this problem? his cats fur is starting to fall out and it has acne on its chin.
