How Do I keep my kitten form scratching the furniture? We got leather couches on Monday and we are afraid to put them out becuase they were expensive and we dont want to have our new couches to have scratches. We also still want to keep her and dont want to give her away just becuase of the couches. But, we also want to keep the couches and have no scratches on them, cause i know that leather scratches easily. There must be a way form keeping her form scratching the sofa.

so happy to hear ur not gona declaw:) Maybe u can place the couches closes to the wall, w/the back to the wall more not in the open. My kitty never scratched the couches & now after a year of havin her we moved the couches to an open area & she scratches them! Also, trim her nails, get a scratchin post.etc.. Thats the only thing u can do besides puttig covers on the couches or something. Also, watch her/him often & when u see shes about to scratch spray water on her back only & say nooooo ______! (< his/her name) not too loud but not to soft! Good luck.

PetSmart, Wal-Mart, Pet Barn and other stores sell a cat repellant in the form of a spray that can be sprayed on any surface to keep a cat away. It is odorless and does not damage any material (leather included). However, since this is a kitten we are talking about it may take a while for it to learn to stay away from the furniture. Perhaps getting a scratching post or kitty jungle gym to keep him occupied and away from the couches could help.
Something else you may want to try is getting immitation leather couch covers and covering your furniture with them just in case the kitten decides to go on "hyper mode", as many do, and run around the house and jump on everything.

Hi Adeline...consider the following ideas to help keep your new furnishings nice:
- trimming your kitten's claws weekly to help dull the ends.
- strategically place scratching posts nearby with catnip rubbed on them. The idea is to encourage clawing of the posts rather than the furnishings. Also try different types because some cats prefer horizontal scratching as well as vertical.
- In addition consider using double sided sticky tape to discourage clawing behaviours. Cats dislike having their paws stuck so the tape is an effective deterrent which eventually the kitten will soon learn it no longer pleasant and then avoid those areas altogether.

Before you get the kitty declawed you may want to invest in this inexpensive item that you can purchase at your local Walmart: smartkitty superscratcher with catnip. I have 2 cats and 2 superscratcher's and they no longer scratch the furniture.

you don't have to declaw her, simply give her other things to scratch like a cat condo, put double sided tape on the areas of your coush she would scratch, that will teach her not to scratch the couches, if she still won't stop, don't let her in the room with the couches unless you watch her closley

Buy or build your kitten a scratching post. They can imbed their claws in the carpet that the scratching post is made of. Maybe get several posts. They like to pull their claws and stretch them on a scratching post. You can train your cat to use these. Demonstrate to the cat by putting it's claws on the post. They tend to learn fairly quick.

make kitty a place for her to scratch--let her know it is JUST FOR HER. when you see her approach the sofas , lift her up, take her to her scratching place, and remind her constantly that she may only scratch there. she will come around. love her, talkj to her--she will learn.
try temporarily covering the arms of the sofa with a throw or blanket until kitty ges her stuff together. let her know she is important and special and she will cooperate. mine does!

Easy, get her a scartch pad and a scratch pole, solves the problem quickly, make sure to change them when they get old and used up
one more thing get the ones with cat nip in them, otherwise they wont stop

the only thing that is going to stop her is declawing her. If you are not going to declaw her, then all I can tell you is to except the scratches. Its really one or the other...sorry.
