I believe that simply having your dog registerd with the AKC is over stated. They do not gurantee health or eliminate concerns of genetic problems. The truth is if someone is trying to be dishonest it can be done even using the AKC. I am not a vet but I would guess it is possible for new health problems to exist with an animal that can be passed on when it was not present in previous litters(no history) A dna test can prove that your dog is purebred. The love of your animal and good health monitoring, knowing the parentige of your dog (could that be possible without the great papers of the AKC?) and being honest (works)

She is 8 months old and has started showing signs of dominance. She barks/growls whenever people go up the stairs or leave the house. Telling her NO! and looking her in the eye stops the barking but she just does it again the next day. Do I have to re-establish pack order or just treat the barking

Has anyone got any advice on how we can stop our 2 year old Kelpie from chewing our garden hoses into pieces.
The hose connects to the shed evaporative cooler, and shed sink, and it's annoying if it has to be disconnected all the time.
Any ideas?

A close friend of the family has a mixed dog that does what she pleases. The dog barks in a ferocious manner when people leave, in a territorial sense. When people have food she's all up in their face and if you even turn for a slight second, she'll nab your food and she is still not disciplined. The dog also has a nasty nasty habit of peeing/pooping in every single room the dog has access too, eating the cat's feces from the litter box - anything she wants, she gets to do. Her owners yell at her when she lays waste inside, or eats cat feces, but not in a manner to have an effect. They let the dog out about every 2 hours for a good 20 minutes. She's always rewarded with treats. There's times that she will come right back in, and go pee/poo somewhere they're not looking. Their house is starting to smell so bad that people just don't want to go over there due to the overwhelming odor. What steps need to be taken to get this dog in order, and to relay the information in a friendly manner?

I've been reading and I am confused on the names of cichlids.

Rams cichlid, german ram, butterfly cichlid, bolivian cichlid, gold ram?

Same or different? I'm thinking of keeping the bolivian cichlid because i heard that they are the easiest to keep in a planted tank compared to other cichlids. Does the bolivian ram dig up the substrate, because that would be bad. =(

Thanks!

I've got a 16 year-old-bichon who lives with my parents. He's healthier than ever, still runs around. But he's getting senile. For one, he pees and poops around my parents' house every other day. They keep a clean house and absolutely hate him. For two, he's increasingly moody... whines a lot, and gets dangerously snappy when woken up (since he sleeps all the time, he has to be woken up to be fed and taken to the restroom). For three, he's somewhat blind and doesn't hear well. Sometimes he starts barking for no reason. My parents think he's losing it... My whole family adores dogs, but they all want to put our bichon to sleep. I disagree. But I want to know everyone's thoughts on the ethics of this.

I recently had my wood floors refinished in the main living area of the house....my dog had no problem being in this part of the house previously or after the finish job.....However, the job was botched and someone else had to come back and make it right. Strangely, ever since then my dog will not go into that part of the house. He is absolutely against going in there, and to even try to get him to go in there makes him even more anxious about it. There is no reasonable explanation as to why this has happened....I just want him to be able to enjoy the rest of the house with everyone else - He loves to be around people, and it makes me sad that this fear is keeping him sequestered to the bedroom. What can I do? I've tried to lure him with food - doesn't work....Help!

I have had my fish for about 2 months now, and while he is usually a pretty active pet, he has mysteriously started to hang out at the bottom, or vertically at the top.

I've been reading on his symptoms, and I think he either has swim bladder disorder, or he's dying. I recently changed his water, and I changed 100% of it, so maybe that's the cause of it.

The water temp is almost always around 78 degrees, and he has plenty of space to move around.

Does anybody know what's wrong?

it's been 3 wks. we've adopted a 4 month old male kitten, "Balieze". Our older cat, Gabriella still hisses at him a LOT actually, however in certain ways she's been adjusting I've noticed.
ppl generally have said that the average amount of time would be 3 months and the two could actually even become fond of one another.
he is TRYING to get her attention, play w/her,but miss Gabriella just wants to show him who's boss I guess.

Have you ever encountered this problem w/new pets, cats particuliarly, and did they eventually learn to accept one another in time? IS there still a chance I'd come home one day from work and actually see them snuggling?
[right now cannot picture is, lol]

the vase holds about 1 gallon of water..
i'm thinking water changes would be stressful on the betta because since it's such a small amount of water, concentrations of anything (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, etc) would change significantly at the slightest change of water. so how should i cycle the vase? do i make any adjustments to the norm of cycling a tank? like should i increase/decrease the %age of weekly water changes or increase how often i do water changes or both??

my friends got me a betta in a vase for my birthday and i'm away at college, but i have a fish tank at home. i've had some fish care experience and i'm worried about the whole fish in vase/bowl controversy. but what if you place gravel in the vase from an already established fish tank???

please state the reliability of your answer ie. you're a veterinarian, you study fish, you've cared for whatever fish for however many years, etc.

One of us has a minor pet allergy so we keep our bedroom door closed to minimize pet allergens in our sleeping area. However, starting about a month ago and each and every night since, our neutered 4 y .o. cat starts scratching our door starting any time between 12-4am, continuing NONSTOP until morning. As a kitten he was disciplined with a water spray bottle but no amount of spraying, or presenting him with that intent, has curbed this new behavior. I lined the door with fabric but he clawed through it until the wood was reexposed. The layout of our small condo provides only 2 rooms where he could be isolated overnight. One would keep our child awake, the other is nearby enough so his scratching to get out would be heard by all. Until recently this was never a problem so we don't know what started it. We give him lots of love every night before bed. Please, we need other ideas! And please, no uproars about the spray bottle. This is documented, safe discipline for cats.

my friend got me a betta fish in vase that holds..i wanna say approx. 1 gallon of water. but i'm worried about it because there's all this controversy about betta fish in vases. does anyone know the main points for the objections?

is it just because it's much too small than their natural habitat so it's considered inhumane?
-we're never going to be able to create a home anywhere near the size of his natural habitat, so of course bigger will always be better so i'm thinking the size should be okay for now because he's got quite a bit of swimming space..

or does it have something to do with the ability of keeping the water in good conditions for the fish?
-because i'm thinking cycling would be stressful on the betta because water changes in such a small amount of water would drastically change concentrations of anything (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, etc) but what if you placed gravel into the vase from an already established tank and you go ahead and do regular weekly water chang

My puppy is four months old and for now I leave her in a crate when I am gone (even though I really don't like it). I make sure to be gone no more than three hours at a time. I'm with her for most of the day. I have a dog door, but I know it will be a while before I can give her free reign in the house.

I live in the desert, and winter days are nice here. Usually in the 60's or 70's. I have a nice backyard with two covered porches. Right now I feel Abbie is too young to leave alone outside, which is why I crate her. What I'm wondering is, at what (approximate) age do you think I should be able to leave her outside alone?

Hello,
I have an 11.5 year old male (LH mancoon)cat that became sick Thursday. We took him to the vet Friday. They told us it would cost $500-$1000 to have tests ran to see what could be wrong with him. We can't afford it with a 2 year old to feed as 1st priority.
We paid $200. to have him injected with fluids under his skin and they sent us home with clovomax (sp?). they told us to monitor him and bring him back Monday if he hasn't improved. He has been throwing up since yesterdaym it is yellow stomach bile. His pee is orange and thick. He seems in better spirits today but I think it is just because he is slightly more hydrated. What could be causing this? What tests are necessary to resolve this? Are there some that can be eliminated to help us with cost?
Is there anything I can do for him at home to help keep him nourished? I have tried giving him food/water but he vomits it back up.

Please help, we LOVE our cat and can't stand to see him like this.

Thanks,
Chrissy

This kitten bites so much, you can hardley pet him. And he'll jump on your back side and claw his way up your back. He is really getting to be too much!

I know its comfortable and all but with interest by the time its paid off it will cost me nearly 1000 dollars.

I think its more annoying to me because the damn dog knows I don't want it on my couch. It jumps off every time I walk in the room. we do have another couch that is leather but not not as nice in another room and it is always dog accessible.

my roomate says to walk it off my couch and onto the other one than give him a treat. but that is not my job. its not my dog.

I would rather just beat it with a broom. but I don't. I just yell at it. okay... once I threw a hat at it. but even after that. as soon as no one is looking... he's back on the couch.

I don't hate dogs, I just hate dogs that aren't mine.

If I had a dog it would be awesome. it wouldn't get on my couch unless invited and I would train it to bite his dog when it trys to go on my couch.

I have a 2yr. old english bulldog that has HORRENDOUS gas! The smell is lterally breathtaking (the sound can be shocking as well).

She passes gas almost constantly. My house & furniture now permanently smell like her "toots".

She eats a high quality Lamb & Rice kibble, no table scraps, I mix plain yogurt in with her kibble (I heard that helped with gas). We walk her 3 times a day (morning, evening & before bed)....& bless her llittle heart she just keeps tooting.

I know that EBD are more prone to gas & that is a reality I gladly accepted when she became part of my family, but this is getting ridiculous!
