You've been 'laid off' from a great job and there's no work in sight. You've exhausted all your resources and unemployment is giving you a hassle about your claim. You have the usual debts, mortgage, cars, credit cards, spouse and children to care for. You have access through a casual friend to several Maltese, a couple of Poodles, and a Yorkshire Terrier. All are intact and in fact, the girls are already in heat. They're a real steal- but they don't have papers, only minimal shots, and your acquaintence laughs when you ask about soundness testing. Do you snatch these dogs up and breed them? The holidays will be here sooner than you realize and "Designer Puppies" would be great sellers. You could probably make enough to pay the bills for a few months AND put gifts under the tree.

Do you do it?

Why or why not? As usual, thanks for the input- every opinion counts- I don't delete or report what I don't agree with...

she always used puppy pads and never really went outside much, but i have moved in with someone and they dont want the pads around so we have trained her to use to bathroom outside. she goes in the grass but at night she pees in her cage (even her bed) . i thought they would not pee where they have to lay. why does she do this. almost every night. she also only gets water at around 5 when i feed her.

My understanding from the breeder is that it is required after so many litters from one female, is this true?

My daughter took her horse to an "away" schooling show Saturday. The horse was extraordinarily hyper. She had so much trouble controlling him in her flat classes she scratched from her jumping classes out of fear of injury to herself and/or the horse. While I fully support her decision to scratch under the circumstances, I want to try to avoid this situation in the future, if possible. This is only the second show she has taken him to (only owned him a few months). He did very well at first show, although showed some apprehension at audience people near the ring. This past weekend circumstances were as follows: He travelled without another horse (previous show he travelled with 3 others). Wind was blowing quite briskly (Noel was offshore around the same time. Not close, but could that have factored?) The show "ring" was makeshift. They had turned over the base of their regular ring and so had simply cordoned off an area of grass. One side was on a downward grade (or upward depending).

I took in a friend's cat (Morris) recently; we have two other cats. Morris came to us with fleas and we noticed right away that his bottom lip was swelling and he had some pretty severe swelling and bumps on his neck. We immediately took care of the flea problem and saw immediate improvement.

It's been 3 months now and his lip is STILL swollen and I'm starting to find bumps on his neck again. No scabs or crusties, but hard knobby bumps.

He's eating OK and acting fine so I'm not really worried about his actual health. However, he can't be feeling really good and it's starting to worry me. What are some typical cat allergies that I could be looking for? I use Frontline Plus for fleas, is there something better I should be using? I have not noticed any fleas or symptoms with my other cats, so I didn't think that was it; is it possible that is still the problem?

I would appreciate any advice that I can try before I have to take him to the vet. Thanks!

I adopted a German Shepherd about 6 months ago. We've recently found out that he has arthritis, was shot in the hip at some point (bullet is still in his hip), and has "shallow" hip sockets. Our vet referred his x-ray's to a surgeon to see if he needs hip replacement. Surgery will run in the thousands ... are there any pet insurance policy's that will cover pre-existing conditions like this?

Vets.
Someone to turn to when your dog is in danger of his health. How did you find your vet and what things do you check to make that vet a good one?
Also since we all love talking about our dogs and showing them off I would like to ask you to share a funny, cute, naughty story of your dog(s).

Some of these can be the same as old ones but be specific!

My 7 month old Boston Terrier/Beagle mix puppy seems to be developing "wear spots" in the crook of her front legs and body (armpits if she was standing upright.) Is this a common occurrence in some types of dogs?

Hi,

I discovered yesterday that my cat has tapeworm. My vet gave me a Drontal XL tablet for him today, which I understand treats both tapeworm and roundworm. Can anyone tell me how long it should take to work on the tapeworm? I would have asked the vet nurse, but they were somewhat run off their feet when I collected the tablet!

Also, if he had roundworm, how long would it take to work on them? I'm pretty sure he doesn't have them, but I'd like to prepare myself just in case there's any wee surprises waiting for me in the litter tray!

The cat is regularly combed for fleas. I've never found any on the cat or his bedding, carpets etc, so I can only assume that the tapeworm has been picked up from one of his regular mouse banquets.

Thanks in advance.

My parents recently took in a stray cat who, for whatever reason, was abandoned by his previous owner. (I say this because he DEFINITELY acts like an indoor cat... nice coat, very loving, uses the litter box.) We put up signs everywhere and I posted "found cat" ads on the lost/found pet websites. Unfortunately, no one responded. After a couple of months, my mom was able to find him a good home with someone in our family. The person who decided to take the cat asked that we have him spayed first.

*SO* my mom found a place that takes in strays, fixes them for free, and then releases them again. Low on money, she asked if she could get him fixed and then have him released back to her and they agreed. When she got him back, he had a chunk missing from his ear!!! She said they do this to mark that the cat has already been there. Isn't the fact that he's SPAYED enough? It makes me sense to me! He's a beautiful cat and there was nothing wrong with his ears before. What do you guys think?

My precious furball was in the last of three portable trailers at the kill shelter, in the last stack of cages, in the cage one up from the bottom. I leaned over and said, "Hi sweetheart, don't you have a pretty face?" (And she did - deep grey, like a Russian blue.) Wily little thing that she is, she purred and stuck her paw out of the cage, which got her to the next round in the play room. In the playroom, I sat cross-legged on the floor. She came trotting over, jumped into my lap, curled up, and did that hopelessly cute paw-over-the-eyes thing. That sealed the deal. She got me to ignore that she was at least 5, had a chipped tooth, a scrawny kinky tail, and a floppy post-pregnancy belly. Yes, my fuzzball is the queen of shameless self-promotion. She's been a good buddy for 7 years now. :-)

I have a common pleco who is about 3 in long. It will not eat! I have tried every veggie under the sun and algae wafers. All which are ignored except by my apple snail. I don't know what else to do... I know they are nocturnal but it never seems to be off of the glass!

Two fish in a fifteen gallon acquarium, how often do you feed them? They are always ravenous and getting pretty big.
