My understanding from the breeder is that it is required after so many litters from one female, is this true?

AKC is now requiring DNA be done on dogs that are used multiple times for breeding.

Some parent breed clubs are now requiring DNA be done on ALL dogs of their breed used for breeding (Bernese Mtn Dog club will not allow you to enter the National Specialty without a DNA record).

Some breeders are now DNA'ing all pups before they are sold. This guarantees the pups are who (from the mother and father) the breeder says they are.

DNA testing is required for a male that has produced more than a certain number of litters. Some breeders provide the records as proof that the dog is of the parentage they have specified.

Edit: I forgot the mention it is also used when the female has been bred to multiple dogs to prove which dog sired which puppy.

Not that I am aware of, but I am not a rottie owner these days. I do know some breed clubs are participating in DNA record collection for purposes of future medical research related to breed specific medical problems. I believe AKC is also maintaining a DNA registry- you could find out more about that on their web site.

NO it's usually for the male to prove he's a pure bred but that doesn't mean the mom is or hasn't been bred to more than one dog.
To me it's just a way for AKC t make money
the female nor the pups are tested.
Also does that mean the pups in previous litters are worthless no just a mney maker

You can get a DNA certificate for any dog if you choose to.

It is required for males that have sired a certain number of litters, or for imported sires.
