Our miniature poodle is 16 or 17 and we know that's pretty old, but what's the expected life span of this size poodle?

Thanks. Unfortunately, about 4 years ago he got into some rat poison. He recovered... mostly, but ever since drinks a LOT of water, and his appetite has declined. More recently (the last two years or so) he has gone almost completely blind and deaf. In the last 6 months or so he spends most of his day sleeping :( We know the end is near, but since he doesn't seem to be in any pain - and there's no reason for him to be, we can't bring ourselves to put him to sleep just because he's not as spry as he once was.

Hopefully, you may have another year or two with your poodle. Mini's usually last into the late teens - a few going 20 or so. I had 2 that lived 15 & 17 years. Depends on the health of the dog. The one that died at 15 had heart murmurs from a relatively early age and developed a conjunctivitis in the lungs that we couldn't clear up. The 17 yo we put to sleep as his health was failing and he no longer had any quality of life. Hopefully, yours is still fairly healthy. best wishes

Observation-
Size and life span of dogs seems to be inversely proportionat...
The bigger the breed, the shorter the life expectancy... the smaller the breed, the longer they hang around.
I almost wonder if he's sleeping a lot because it's a way to escape the pain.
I know- not what you wanted to hear, but it's a thought. Talk to your vet, ask what he recommends.

My mini lasted until five weeks short of her 13th birthday. She had to be put down because she had pulmonary hypertension. I am fortunate to have had her that long because she developed an immune system disease when she was 18 months old. I had her on steroids for approximately 10 years. Plus she had liver cancer and had surgery 3 months prior to her death. She was not a healthy dog from the get go but I managed to keep her alive and happy for almost 13 years. It has been a little over two weeks ago that I had to put her down and I am still grieving and hurting very much. I cry everyday that passes because I miss her so much. I had her since she was 10 weeks old and it just broke my heart to say goodbye to her. She definitely was an angel from heaven!

Small breeds who are well cared for can expect to live for 14 years and up. My little Lady died at 17. And I miss her still and she has been gone over 20 years ago.. She didn't die on her own, but she was in such pain from an enlarged heart and other conditions I allowed her to go home to God with dignity.
So as long as she is getting around and happy enjoy her and be prepared to grieve.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU8f1
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
