she always used puppy pads and never really went outside much, but i have moved in with someone and they dont want the pads around so we have trained her to use to bathroom outside. she goes in the grass but at night she pees in her cage (even her bed) . i thought they would not pee where they have to lay. why does she do this. almost every night. she also only gets water at around 5 when i feed her.

She has to learn to hold it now... she will get the hang of it!! Make sure you take her out to potty right before bedtime.

If this is a consistent behavior, then it sounds like you need to take her out to pee before she goes in her kennel.

You might want to bring pads with you outside for a few times so she can relate the outside with potty. Afterwards you can try "weaning" her off the pads, but praise her when she does potty outside.

Get her a bigger crate put a pad at the front so she can potty on that and not her bed. Feed her at 4 and let her out right before bed .Some just can not hold it ! You can always get her a baby diaper for nights .Good luck

what do you mean she only gets water at around 5 when you feed her?? you mean you don't leave water for her all day? omg. you have to leave fresh water all day for your dog. you can't just give it to them at 5 and then no more. that is the weirdest thing i have ever heard. if she is only getting water at 5, no wonder she pees in her bed. she probably drinks so much at 5 because she knows that is all she is getting. wow, i hope you didn't mean that...dogs need access to water at all times during the day. then maybe in the evenings pick up the water after a certain time.

She is probably confused. When training a dog to go potty, they should be trained to do either or, outside, or on the pad. Since she has been trained many years to go on the pad and now is trying to be trained to go outside, she is confused. How long have you been trying to get her to go outside? You may just have to be patient and just think of her as a puppy and retrain her. Just remember, she has been trained for 5 years to go on the pad! It won't be easy for her, or you.

make sure she has water at all times, not just once a day.

get a smaller crate, one for her size.

take pee pads out with you for awhile.

consult with a vet, she could have a medical issue, if she is urinating more frequently.

Her crate is too big. she has plenty of room to pee in one side, and sleep in the other. You need to get her a smaller crate. She should have just enough to room to turn around and lay down in it. If the crate is big enough for a lab, then it's way to big to effectively crate train a tiny 5 lb maltese.

A dog should have water available ALL THE TIME. I have a hunch the dog is being intimidated and is experiencing submissive peeing.
