Pets - 11 October 2006

This question is for us cheapies out there. Pets can be pricey (worth it but not cheap). I have 3 big dogs and not a lot of money so I have to budget. What are some tips you have to save money (on treats/food/etc . . .) Here some of mine:

1. Buy flea meds online.
2. Wash dog bed covers! A chore but prevents me from throwing them out every time there's an accident.
3. Use old sofa cushions as back-up dog beds.
4. Pet toys from Target clearance dog aisle. My pets don't need the "coolest" toy on the block--they can use last season's.
5. Target Dollar section sometimes has dog stuff. Bought stainless steel food bowls for a buck each! And they're good quality too!
6. Generic baby shampoo.

is that all they eat? and if so, what kind of nutrients do they get from it? they are solid muscle. don't they eat any protein?

My pug puppy has smelled GREAT until a couple of days ago. His ears STINK SO BAD! He's an indoor pug, only goes outdoors 2 or 3 times a day to relieve himself and go for a short walk around the apartment complex. So he doesn't get into anything dirty really. What causes a dogs ears to smell so bad? And can I fix the problem or would the vet/groomer need to be called?

We've been thinking about getting a second cat, and are wondering what to do. Echo, my 3 year old Siamese cat- girl- I think would get along with any cat, but in the past I've had a boy and girl at the same time. I'm thinking a boy cat may be less threatening to Echo's "space" then another girl cat. What are your thoughts, and what have you experienced in the past?

ok before you say stupid answers ill tell you why, my best friend has several dog male&femal and she says she doesnt want me to fix my dog cuz she says it will ruin him, like he wont be as happy, all i want to do though is breed him once then get him fixed i truly do love dogs and i want to save one of his puppies, oh ya everyone say no you can never let your husky off leash i know plenty of people who let theirs off leash and they are still around, so i let my bot off and he stayed around a weekend i even went inside for like 3 hrs and he was sitting on the grass waitng for me to come back out.so do you believe that they will run away on you?

I just moved into a small house and decided that the kitty litter boxes had to go into the garage. We installed a kitty door between the living room and the garage. We have three cats, they seem scared of it. When they are IN the garage they will enter back into the house, but will not enter the garage from the living room! Also when I tape the "plastic door" up, they will use the door, but I cant leave the door up because of the air conditioning. Any ideas on how to get my kitty's to use their new door? thanks all!

about 2 days ago i bought 4 male guppies, two were taquila sunrise ans two were your ordinary fancy male guppies. well we put them in our fish tank after letting them float for 30 mintues, and just befor we started floating them we added salt. our tank has 6 zebra danioes and one corry catfish, we dont know but we think the zebra danioes might be doing it b/c we have whatched them and they chase them around. there is no other apperent reason for them dying.....what should we do?

for the past week a little hedgehog has been happily wondering round the garden. today however her appears to be rather poorly and is shaking. we were going to take him to the rspca in clifton but its closed on a wednesday afternoon. does anyone know of anywhere else? i have put him in a box with some hay for warmth but if there's nowhere to take him we're not sure what to do. any ideas would be great!

I have 4month old lab.This big gross dog a cross the street is coming up towards her all the time. She goes very nuts and barks like crazy..Yesterday, she was tied up and that male dog was licking her..She is still real small and that big dog could kill her.. Did you really need to take them for annual check up for vaccinations every year??? or is it just money making???

I have two cats and they are both indoor cats never go and mix with other cats cos i live in a high rise flat.

I have problems getting my dog to wee, last night I took her into the garden for her last walk and I was out for an hour an a quarter but she wouldn't go. Eventually I took her up the road by our village hall and straight away she obliged but at 12.15 at night I do not like having to walk up the road, we have only one street light and it is dark and creepy. How can I get her to go in the garden. It is not as if she NEVER goes some night she will oblige straight away. Even first thing in the morning when she must want to wee I have to take her up the road and even then some mornings I have to go a long way before she does anything and I really haven't time - anyone any ideas?

It's been a month since my dog has this nagging etch in its eye.it keeps on rubbing its left eye and there is a constant flow of liquid.i went to vet he said it is a infection(viral??).he recommended me (pendistrin-SH) containing penicillin,streptomycin,sulfamerazine and hydrocortistone in plastobase)and said this will take some time to heal.but i see no improvment and the tube has no medicine left.so yesternight when it got worse i put ("Ciprofloxacin 0.3% 5ml solution) It made my dog squeek quite a lot .dog was trying to scratch it's eye using hind legs nail.On closer inspection i can see a small white patch on it leftish side of the eye's surface (not deep) but like a layer not covering the whole eye though just to make it clear.any solution or diagnosis? or medicine plz include name as well as schedule to administer it.
