I have problems getting my dog to wee, last night I took her into the garden for her last walk and I was out for an hour an a quarter but she wouldn't go. Eventually I took her up the road by our village hall and straight away she obliged but at 12.15 at night I do not like having to walk up the road, we have only one street light and it is dark and creepy. How can I get her to go in the garden. It is not as if she NEVER goes some night she will oblige straight away. Even first thing in the morning when she must want to wee I have to take her up the road and even then some mornings I have to go a long way before she does anything and I really haven't time - anyone any ideas?

There are sprays available at your pet store that you spray and it makes the dog want to wee.

I think she's learned to wait until you oblige her. You'll need to quit walking her up the street for a pee break for a while until she learns that YOU decide where she goes, not her. Giving in will only make the problem worse.

Keep her on your property for well beyond long enough (I know you don't have much time, but you need to train her when you do have the time... a few days hassle will save you years of inconvenience) and if she doesn't go, bring her in, give her a good drink and try again. If she still doesn't go, bring her back in the house a wait a while before trying again. When she does go, praise, praise, praise! She'll make the connection and want to do the right thing for you.

Also make sure you take her where she wants to go after a stellar performance someitmes.... she apparently sees it as some sort of reward to walk up the road so treat it as one.

I house trained three dogs this way: take them where you want them to go, if they do not go within 15 minutes, take the dog back inside and put them in a kennel for 10 minutes, after 10 minutes take the dog back outside and wait another 15 minutes, repeat this until the dog "goes" where he/she should, and give him/her a treat and lots of praise when he/she finally goes in the desired area. I know it sounds time consuming, but you want your dog to associate "going in the right spot" with something very positive. Most dogs will not go to the bathroom in the kennel because the space is too small, so they will be more likely to "go" when you take them out. The main idea is to establish your alpha role with your dog, by controlling when and where they "go" you are asserting your dominant role as the pack leader. I hope this helps.

Is your dog getting enough water? If so, try to keep her on a schedule to go out and pee. They learn very quickly when it's time to go outside.
