for the past week a little hedgehog has been happily wondering round the garden. today however her appears to be rather poorly and is shaking. we were going to take him to the rspca in clifton but its closed on a wednesday afternoon. does anyone know of anywhere else? i have put him in a box with some hay for warmth but if there's nowhere to take him we're not sure what to do. any ideas would be great!

i have given him a little bowl of catfood and water so i think we're going to keep him in the box overnight and take him tomorrow.

Other than the local vet or RSPCA there are these places:

This is mainly swans, but wildlife too:

And on this site there are loads of hedgehog related nos and sites (after the first section on hamsters!)

Good luck - hope you can help the little critter - my boyfriend and I just adore hedgehogs, he even uses a little sketch of one to sign off cards sometimes!

I had a baby hedgehog last year it was wandering about in November. It only weighed 8oz, too light to hibernate, must be about half a kilo. You can buy proper food for hedgehogs from pets at home.I kept him indoors over winter in spare warm room.
Do not let him get cold and hibernate. If you put a cat litter tray down he will use it , ours was very clean. Give water to drink not milk as its scours them and can kill, they also like worms. They make charming pets for the winter and can get very friendly. There is a place in Lincolnshire that takes in Hedgehogs I will reply when I have found the address

If you see a hedghog outside in October you should weigh him - if he is less than 500g then he is in trouble as he should be hibernating very soon and his weight is too low to get him through the winter. You need to feed him up with dog food to boost his weight. If he is small he will need to be kept inside over the winter to keep him warm - he won't hibernate indoors and will need feeding and lots of bedding, but that's okay - hedgehogs just hibernate to keep warm. If you don't want to look after him yourself, you need to take him to a rescue centre like St Tiggywinkles. But don't set him free now - he will die!

In the meantime put him in the cardboard box filled with ripped up newspaper and soft bedding now, and give him some dog food - that will keep him sorted for tonight.

a normal vet might treat it ,hedgehogs should be hibernating now but only if they have reached a certain weight ,you could try phoning tiggywinkles and ask them if they know anywhere locally you could take it ,they were a great help to me when i had the same problem

Phone the RSPCA National Helpline on 0870 5555 999 and they will tell you what to do. Far safer than random guesswork from well meaning people on the net!

You could try ringing your local vet and see what they suggest. Not sure if it is cat food or dog food that they like, if you have some maybe try and put some out for it. Make sure it has water as well.

He may have wobly hedgehog syndrome. It's like MS for hedgehogs.

Give him vitamin C in fruits.
