They only think about how fun and cute a new puppy is, and don't think about the long term needs of the animal and the time and commitment required. It grows up, isn't as cute but just as demanding and they lose interest. Leave it outside more and more and play with it less and less. It's very sad but unfortunately thats just the way some jerks are.

I agree people should not have a pet if they are not going to take care of it, but do not confuse the fact that an animal is chained up with it being neglected. When I was a young child, I remember we had a St. Bernard that we had to leave chained up. This dog was well trained (in my opinion) and would never stray farther than he could find his way back home, even at our country house or at the deer lease. He was perfect for us as children and wonderful, but he was huge and could not be contained in our yard. He was not nuetered and I couldnt tell you why my parents never had it done, but who knows. We would come home to find him on our front porch (scaring the mail man) or he'd be in the pound cause the mail-man called on him. He had a girlfriend down the street and her owner didnt like our dog coming over to visit. Eventually my dad chained him up. He would have plenty of time to run and play on our 40 acres on the weekend, not to mention who knows where else he roamed. He was very happy and we played with him a lot and let him off the chain when we were in the backyard with him. He wouldnt leave then.

well i feel that people that have dogs and that do this it makes me sick to my stomache because when they forget about them that is when the dog ends up dying. people that do this just want to look cool for their buddys and that right there is a stupid reason to get a dog. i have watched the animal planet and i have seen this and it makes me sick that there are people out there that will do this and they think that it is ok to do. i had a person live next to me and they had done the same thing and i mentioned it to them and they told me that they are cared for and that they are being fed and watered. but that was not the case i kept track of this person and found out that the dog was getting thinner and then i called the animal control on them and reported them for what they were doing to this poor dog. these people that had the dog were druggies and they didn't care about the dog. they had him tied to a short chain (about 2 ft long) not long enough for the dog to do anything else but lay there.
but yes this p*** me off when people do this to their dog, and treat it as an object and not their family pet

You never really know for sure, sometimes the dog gets all of it's attention while we are at work, and then is outside in a run or on a chain while they are at work.
But I have also learned that the only person on this planet that I can change is me, everyone else will have to fend for themselves.
And reguardless of how tempted you may be, NEVER let another persons dog loose, unless you have a couple of hundred thousand you want to give away. Because that is probablly what it will end up costing after that loose dog bites someone.

It's definetely a form of animal cruelty. I couldn't amagine doing that with my dogs. Both of my dogs are a part of my family. If you're going to get a dog you should find out about the breed of dog first .Ex how big will the dog get ,will he like strangers ,is the dog going to be good with kids , and so forth. To many people get puppies that they think are cute ,then the dog turns into a adult dog , owners know nothing of the breed ,dogs wind up ignored and tied up ,it's not a cute puppy any more. The novelty wears off and the dog winds up alone ,ignored ,and tied up.Our society allows this to happen.
I honestly think that animal cruelty laws need stricter penalties for people who violate animal rights. I also think that each and every complaint made about a dog in distress should be followed up. Not enough are followed up.

I have no idea, it really makes me angry too!
My neighbors did this exactly thing and it is so sad.... the dog just sits out in their yard, bored to death, barking its head off looking for some sort of attention.
The kids are afraid of the thing because it isn't even trained and since it's not a cuddly little puppy anymore (and get this it was a X-mas present *puke*) nobody even pets the dog.
What's sad is I talked to the humane society about the situation and they said as long as the dog is kept in good health, has food, water and shelter, there's nothing they can do..... they can't prove emotional abuse, so they can't enforce it as neglect!
So frustrating.... people should need to get a license to own pets.

Those people just like the "idea" of having a pet, but have no intentions of taking proper care of it. I have a two neighbors that have one dog each, and both dogs are in small fences in their back yards. The dogs never get out, and both are big dogs. I tried talking to one neighbor about his dog. All he had to say was how much he hated his dog, and never wanted another. Then why not give the dog to someone who will take care of it. He didn't like that idea, either. Those kinds of people don't deserve animals of any kind.

People typically don't go our and get dogs and cats...they get cute little puppies and kittens as playthings for their kids. But, what? The puppes turn into full grown dogs? The kittens don't stay kittens? Well, it's easier with cats because they are relativley independent. At least a cat can hunt birds for food and no one puts them on a leash. It's the dogs who suffer, unattanded, unloved, and ignored...all chained in backyards across America, barking all day and night.

Some people are simply cruel - others have to do this to protect others. I had to chain my dog outside (during the day) for over a year because I couldn't afford to completely fence my acre of land. It was a sad and unavoidable period of my life. Now we are happy, my doberman and the family, and, very important, other people are safe.
The animal lover......

Some people are lame thats why. I would love to chain up the people who do this to their dogs and see how they like it. Mine have freedom to come in or out when they please but are mostly in the house right next to me until they have to potty and then they go out and come right back in again. They have special pads to lay on and they will go and drag them out of the extra room when ever they want to lay down. I dont like them to lay on the bare floors because they get those nasty looking bald spots on thier elbows well what ever you call that part of a dogs leg. They sleep with me on the bed at night. My husband isnt to thrilled with that idea but oh well I doubt he wants to argue with them. I have 2 dobies. The dad and his son.
