I have a 100 year old colonial. we are renovating the exterior and it needs a major makeover. It's a solid brick house. Mortar needs to be repointed in some areas. It unfortunately has at least 5 old layers of paint that are flaking. What is the best way to revive the outside? Is possible to restore down to the original finish by sandblasting? or Would it be better just to powerwash and repaint? Also is it possible to cover a brick exterior with a textured surface. I saw a house that had a beautiful textured exterior that almost looked like it was sprayed on (looked very thick with big grains or pieces in the textures).
thanks,
Justin

right by my house. I was wondering what the most effective way would be to get rid of them. They fly in and out all day... there are tons and tons of them! Spray may work, but are there other solutions? Thanks for the help in advance!

I live in a third floor apartment, I get lot of sun right into my living room through the large sliding doors even with the vertical blinds closed. Is there any cheeper way to sun-proof the sliding doors with out causing too much damage to the glass? I live in an apartment, so this has to be something I should be able to undo.

One way to get thick curtains to keep the sun out. Are there any tinted sheets or something which I can put on the glass?

I know that killing honey bees is illegal under state law.. but i mean this is the third time they've chosen my house to build their home in and its really getting annoying. I've paid hundreds the past few times to get an exterminator and I really cant afford it anymore. How can I get rid of these bees?

They've been there slightly less than a month now

I lost the instructions to my ceiling fan. I cannot remember what position the switch should be in to cool the room instead of pushing warm air down. Yes, you would think I could feel the difference, but I can't. Is there a way of telling other than by feeling the air?

In my house house which is on the pittsburg marina, there are the bugs that look like flat worms with like fifty legs(that's a guess, I didn't really count). They are not centipedes or milipedes. I,m sure because the legs are longer than those. The top of them (including the top of the legs) is striped with black and like a creamish white color. The bottom is all the same creamish color. When I first saw it a few days ago it was climbing up my wall pretty fast. Today I caught one that was a little bit smaller but again was climbing up my wall. I put it in a plastic jar and it appears to not be able to climb on the smooth surface. Please tell me what these bugs are for they are creeping me out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a friend who has been doing this for at least 10 years but I moved away and am just curio on the safety of this...Can you can tomatoes by boiling the juice, washing (using vinger) & heating the jars in the dishwasher, boiling the lids, then when the tomato juice has boiled-about 15 minutes- she takes out the jars, adds the tomatoe juice, puts on a lid, screws on a band- then turns them upside down for 24 hrs. - they always seal for her- seems easy and watching her looks easy...But is there a danger in this? I would like to know......

Several months ago the news of the colony colapse came out and noted that several crops were in danger . (due to lack of pollination)
But no news since then !
Anyone know the current status of the crops ?
(LIke the almonds etc )
Also noticed price drops in honey . . . Does that mean there was a turnaround in hive population ?

Thanx for any info . . . Hey , I just noticed there is NO ag / country catagory on Yahoo Q&A ! Only urban catagories !
What is up with that ? (No legit cat for this Q !)

I have two nosy dogs who will create havoc in our new neighborhood if we let them look out the front window (barking at passersby, etc.)

I really need cool ideas for an inexpensive but esthetically pleasing (from inside and outside) "thing" that would cover about 12" (vertical) of the bottom portion of the window. It would need to be easily removable (so we can open the window, etc.)

The simplest thing would be construction paper, but that would look tacky. The next simplest thing would be to put a big plant out there, but they'll be able to see through the leaves.

Thanks in advance to all you creatively clever DIY's !

I recently got a hanging strawberry plant from a greenhouse that I have hanging on my front porch. I constantly see big flies (my boyfriend says theyre horseflies) and small fruit flies on it constantly. What is a good way to get rid of this problem without having to restort to a store-bought pesticide?

I moved into my new flat just over a week ago and I've noticed a silly amount of wood lice appear to have set up home in my kitchen and bathroom. I'd be happy for them to stay if they paid some rent but as they arn't I need a solution for getting rid of them.

Any thoughts?

The describtion of the bug:
Has a copper colored body and can be as little as maybe the plastic on the end of a shoestring or as big and wide as a eraser, you know the big rhombus ones. It has, seemingly, 100 legs and the legs color are a striped pattern of black and like a cream color. I only notice the pest in my home during the summer months and occasionally see them outside. Any ideas?
