what could it be? We just bought the house this year.

It's a pole, it's hollow, metal not sure what kind though, but it's not steel, b/c it does not rust. There is no other pipe connected to it. The top of it looks just like the rest it is just green, (I'm guessing from weather).

It's probably the vent pipe for your drainage system. I'll bet it is in line with a toilet above it. Have someone flush a toilet while you are in the basement. You should hear water going through it.

Pole or pipe? Is it hollow? Does it extend into the floor of the basement? What is it made of? Metal or plastic or wood? What does the top of the pole look like? Are there other poles or pipes connected to it? [We're just answering questions with questions today.]

If it is green where exposed to the weather, it could be copper, my guess is it could be a ground rod, or lightning arrestor.

sounds like a breather pipe for your drainage

its the air vent pipe for your house drains...leave it alone!
