My backyard in Riverside, CA is filled with hard, yellow dirt which is about as hard as concrete. I used a pick ax to dig into the dirt and the ax stopped 1 inch down; its about 30% pebbles and the dirt is rock hard. My pick eventually hit some larger rocks and the end is bent! What can I do to make this land plant-able? Please be as detailed as possible, including all the steps/timeline.

I'm planning to buy crocuses, dutch irises, tulips, oriental lillies, and hyacinths, and I don't want to throw money down the drain with a disreputable company.

I need landscaping suggestions! I just bought a new house, but the only tree's i have are 2-3 big HUGE oak trees. I wanted something I can plant around the house and create a garden. I looked around my neighborhood for ideas, but it doesnt seem anyone has anything creative or eye catching besides the same stuff I have; Dirt. Any ideas? I don't know much, but I can follow directions. I live in a place where we get all 4 seasons; Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall.

I am building an inground pool and want a gold and glitter color rather than the typical greys or whites. Jeff Kerber pool plastering in California has something called gold dust. They have not returned my calls for information. Does anyone know what this gold dust is? Does anyone know of a product that I can throw on to wet pool plaster to get a gold and glitter effect? The glitter needs to not discolor with pool chlorine

The leaf was broken off at the soil line during a move and she told me to plant it in potting soil and it would grow. I'm just wondering how accurate the information is.

I want to put a few trees in our treeless yard and I would like them to grow as quickly as possible. I do not like fruit trees, too many bees. I would prefer small leaves so I don't have to rake in the fall. Any suggestions?

I recently received a bag with an assortment of seeds - flowers (annuals & perinials) and vegetables. Before I plant, I need to know if these are actually still good. Do seeds have a "shelf life?" Some packages have dates stamped on them.

The pool house roof is inset and warm due to the heater and the previous owners used to feed them. I've been told that animal control won't remove them. They are quite bold, but tame - I even caught one swimming in the pool one evening! But I do have two cats, and am afraid to let them out at night. I am afraid the racoons are damaging the roof, and they send little "presents" down into the pool house. Any suggestions?

Anyone know how long PVC tends to last in the great outdoors? I am talking about the white stuff, schedule 40? And I am talking about the wilds of New Mexico, lots of sun, lots of rain lately, lots of wind. How long before it becomes brittle?
