Does it really make a difference when you wash in cold or hot water? I know hot water makes things shrink, so i mainly stick to cold water, but is there anything i SHOULDNT wash in cold water? Or is there a reason i should? And also, i know to seperate darks and lights, but does it really make a difference if its already been washed (the bleeding)?

I have three roommates (for a total of 4 of us). We don't use the dishwasher b/c our water bill is already pretty high. Instead, we all just wash whatever dishes we use at the end of the day.

Sometimes, we'll skip a day and it takes like 15-20 minutes to do half a sink of dishes.

Just wondering if it's cheaper for us to wash a dozen or so dishes everyday (and like one sink full per week), or if we should just use the dishwasher 2-3 times a week.

If it helps, the dishwasher is full-size. The brand is a GE, Triton XL (Eterna series). And it has the Energy Star sticker. :)

Thanks.

OK, so I needed to clean the sole plate of my iron. I Googled "clean an iron" and found a web page that advised using a paste of baking soda and water to clean the sole plate. I did that, and the sole plate is clean, but the baking soda paste stuck in the steam holes in the sole plate. I've already spent half an hour with a toothpick trying to get the baking soda out. There's got to be a better way!

I'm talking about the actual machine that cleans your carpet with water. I want the cleaner to be somewhat good, but not that expensive. I would also consider buying from a used place if anyone knows of any.

My boyfriend and I moved in together three years ago. When he moved out of his house, his mom gave him several boxes of what I would call junk. The contents include report cards, awards, school work...etc. from his childhood. Another box had ornaments from his childhood. There is also an ugly quilt that his dead great-grandmother made and gave to him.

I tried to donate that quilt once with his permission. It was in a new garbage bag, ready to go, but we, unfortunately had a visit from his sister and mom. They were nosey and dug through our garbage bag and found it, took it out, and basically said, "You better keep this because Great Grandma is dead."

WHY? We don't ever use it and we have very little storage room. I also want to toss/give away these ornaments that seem oh so sentimental to THEM, not US, yet they wouldn't take them! What do I do?

Also, no one will ever look at old school work/report cards (not for memories), right? Can I toss them without fear?

I'm not sure exactly what it's called so bare with me. Ok so your air filter in your house, like mine holds a 20x20x1 filter - I'm trying to come up with a clever way to clean the metal slotted vent thing you have to open to get to the filter. it opens from the top and swings out/down, it's attached with hinges across the bottom. Apart from unscrewing the hinges, which I think will be difficult, what's a good way to clean all those little slots? I tried a swiffer duster, and a vacuum hose, but it seems that nothing short of a toothbrush and a loooot of free time,i just can't get all the dust out of those slots. Ideas??

why would a brown recluse or any spiders be living under my bed. I havn't been home and my little cousion has been using my room. Totally destroyed my room, I cant even see ground under my bed. She put clothes under there and etc. But my little chihuahua, and cat go under there all the time, does this mean they wont go near noise?

I just am afraid now to sleep. I am afraid of spiders.

I need to get a new vacuum cleaner that WILL pickup pet hair. The one I have just isn't cutting it anymore. Can anyone recommend a vacuum that is reasonably priced and works? Please tell me from your personal experience - if you don't really know please don't answer. Thanks!

My spouse and I are in contact with some potential housecleaners for our 2 bd 1 ba house.

How do we decide which one to choose?

What kinds of questions should we ask in the first phone conversation?

How much tidying up should we do before each visit? We're fairly messy-will this make their job less efficient?

Are there certain groundrules that we'll need to establish right from the start?

Thanks for your input!

the aluminum on the bottom? We have already replaced the doors once. They arent that old and we would rather just clean the mold off--it gets under the rubber seal. I know chlorine bleach will kill the mold, but it also ruins the aluminum.

I've gotten chewing-gum on my work uniform, and I really need to get rid of it soon.

I know there are about 10 methods that are supposed to work, but in the interest of speed and efficiency, can someone provide one they *know* works?

I live in apartment so I have to do my laundry. Every weekend, I am tired of arguing with my mother about washing machine control. She insists that we must press both Press button and Color button. And, she never listens when I say that is not possible because washing machine cannot work for two functions. What should I do?

Sponges carry the most bacteria out of anything in your kitchen or bathroom, I read once.... so why do we clean with them? Can't I use paper towels instead?
