I'm talking about the actual machine that cleans your carpet with water. I want the cleaner to be somewhat good, but not that expensive. I would also consider buying from a used place if anyone knows of any.

You might be better off renting one from a home improvement store. Unless you are using it constantly, you will pay less and save time by renting a professional machine.

Look up "rug doctor" for machines and info. You should keep an eye on ebay and your local Craigslist. This will probably be your best bet if you are serious about buying one.

Yellow pages. Janitorial equipment or supplies. Many will have used equipment for sale. But if this is just for your home and you are like most people, you don't clean the carpet when it is dirty but when it is unevenly dirty. Like when you can see traffic lanes. Really for home use just to keep it looking good buy something like the Regina carpet cleaner and rent from an equipment rental rather than a supermarket when you want to do the whole thing. If you do buy from a dealer, Castex makes a good smaller and less expensive machine.

Check your local grocery store, many have them for rent. Your home improvement stores such as Lowes and Home Depot have these too. Between washes consider carpet fresheners. Try asking a pet store what is best to use to neutralize odors.
