I dunno about the steamvac--I think that's more of a steamcleaner, not a vacuum. I can vouch for the Dyson, though. It really sucks!!! (In a good way). I had a kirby gen III for years, it was just too heavy, tho it did a good job(so i thought). I had vacuumed with it, and went and got the Dyson. I brought it home, vacuumed with it, and was embarrassed at how much it sucked up after having vacuumed with the kirby that am. We have sandy soil, and it really sucked it up from deep down. I love the fact, too, that everything is right there on the handle, the hose, everything. You will get your money's worth with the Dyson (I got the animal--purple one).

Everyone is going to say get a DYSON.. I've use one and it's nice, but I like my HOOVER SAVVY. It's got attachments, canister and filter(s).. It's also half the price $200.. I DID however buy the extended warranty for about $100 for an additional 3 yrs. of service.. I take my vacuum whether it needs it or not for service 2x a yr. I get a full clean and check and I've had my vacuum for over 4 yrs. No matter what kind of vacuum you buy it's best to have it serviced on a yearly basis. To have it totally cleaned and checked for any problems.. So, I would venture to say try taking your old vacuum to the repair shop and save yourself $400 ! You can't expect a vacuum to work forever w/o some preventative maintance.. Also, a steamer carpet cleaner is ok, but having the rugs professionally cleaned 2x a year is better/cheaper. good luck

I have never liked carpet, but when we rebuilt after hurricane rita we put carpet in the bedrooms due to being 12 foot above ground. Well I wanted a good vacuum also and bought the Dyson slim. I love the thing, but go easy my husband literally pulled my phone charger in half. No Kidding!
