How should we paint our wooden kitchen cabinets. They are dark wood varnished. Do we strip them first and then prime and paint them. The worktops are a blue/grey colour and the walls are white, what colour should we paint the cupboards?

I have recently purchased a small upright acoustic piano for my flat. I would like to keep the noise to a minimum so my neighbours downstairs are not disturbed too much (there is no one upstairs or adjacent).

I was thinking of getting one of the following to put directly below the piano base:
http://www.noisestopsystems.com/buy_soundproofing/product_info.php/products_id/103
http://www.soundservice.co.uk/Quietfloor%20Application.htm

I would be grateful for any comments on whether either of these products are suitable . And any ideas on if I might be able to purchase these locally (Scotland) so I don't have to order online and pay delivery charges.

Also, are there any additional methods of reducing sound levels from my piano? I currently have wooden flooring but will be getting underlay and carpet fitted also. I was only planning on fitting a piece of the soundproof mats listed above directly under the piano as it would be too costly to use this throughout the whole room.

I have an oak table and to try and make a long story short, here's the deal. There was hot food on a paper plate in two spots on my table, obviously it was too hot and now my table has two white marks on it. I've tried the heavy duty wax we got when we bought the table but that didn't take it off. Our last resort is to sand the table and refinish it again, but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem before and maybe there is a simple little home remedy that might work.

Our kitchen has an original vinyl floor and we are going to get ceramic tile now. I assumed the vinyl would be removed before installing the tile, but a contractor says we should leave the vinyl installed and just cover it. Anybody know if this is likely to be correct. Please, no guesses. The opinions of people who truly know what they are talking about would be appreciated.

Staining maple dresser & would like to achieve the new espresso color that is now popular. Any stain we've tried shows too much wood grain but really don't want to paint the dresser (it's 50 years old). Can we put something on the wood first that will prevent too much wood grain showing through and if so what?

The garage draws a tremendous amount of heat during summer months and has virtually no ventillation. The attic covers approx. 1700 sq. ft. of a single story, 4 bd. room house.
