You basically have to scrape them up. First pull as much as you can up. then get some kind of flat tool on a long handle and start scraping up.

pull up the carpet, it will leave parts of the backing glued down, you can buy a tool exactly for this job, it looks like a garden spade, but the spade part is only 1/3 length

This is one of the hardest DIY jobs I've ever had to do.
You need a very sharp stanley knife, a metal scraper and a heat gun. Its sitting, pulling, cutting and scrapping that gets it off. Its hell! Sorry.

it aint easy at all pull scrape heat gun works good too etc.
make sure you wear a mask though as the dust is horrible

use some water and put it under the carpet then use a knife and take it off
